The Minerals, Metals & Materials Society (TMS) is a member-driven, international professional society dedicated to the science and engineering professions concerned with minerals, metals and materials. As the Director of New Initiatives, Science and Engineering for TMS I am responsible for leading the implementation of TMS’s science and engineering strategy and developing new high-impact TMS initiatives and capabilities across TMS domains including science and technology studies, webinars, professional development offerings, specialty conferences, and thematic publications. I also develop programs by building effective relationships with external groups, including government program managers, university and national laboratory representatives, businesses, and other prospective partners. I play a leadership role in strategic planning by staff and volunteers, and manage the New Initiatives, Science, and Engineering Department.

As the Technical Director of TMS I was responsible for building capability in emerging technical areas, identifying new technology-based business opportunities, and guiding development and implementation of technically-related products, services and initiatives to realize TMS strategic growth goals. I worked cooperatively with TMS staff and volunteers and served as the primary technical resource for TMS staff, and led the TMS Technical Department.

I started as a scientist in the Materials Science and Technology Division, and was promoted to Section Head in September of 1994. As a section head, I was responsible for planning, obtaining research funding, execution of research, and publishing investigations on microstructural evolution and processing-microstructure-property correlations in a variety of materials systems. I was also responsible for the supervision of anywhere from five to eight employees and an annual section budget of about $2 million per year or more. My research interests and experience include: 3D materials analyses; studies of microstructural evolution (in particular phase transformations); welding/solidification; processing-microstructure-property correlations in cast, wrought, and welded bulk materials, and thin film systems; Integrated Computational Materials Engineering (ICME) methodologies; materials innovations as applied to manufacturing methods.
