We will examine local activism as examples and case studies to activate a sense of self and responsibility in the community. The class will culminate with a single student media project that highlights the experience and stories of our students, EOP and the communities we serve.Public Affairs Reporting: JOUR210, the second part of a required core for undergraduate students. The class is designed as a newsroom where a pair of students are assigned to a single beat to encourage both collaboration and competition. In addition to weekly beat assignments, students are required to report and write two feature assignments: an anniversary and feature derived from their beat.

Morbidity and mortality in communities of color and lower economic status due to disproportionate distribution of environmental contaminants. Some of the sections of the course may be taught on line. GE Theme H.“Race, Diversity, and Justice” is a theme that integrates the investigation of contemporary issues of racism and social injustice with the goal of understanding what attitudes and behaviors prevent equal treatment for all peoples. This theme presents the conceptual and historical background necessary for responsible moral judgment, subsequent action and the embracement of cultural diversity in a world that is composed of many cultures and societies.PedagogyClassroom community is created through intention in dialogue and discussion. Environmental Racism and Environmental Justice is designed from a Los Angeles perspective of the intersection of public space and environmental justice for people of color.During the next ten weeks, we will study the history of the environmental and environmental justice movements in the United States. Discussion will be informed by critical race theory, intersectionality, civil rights law and environmental legislation. Student groups will present case studies to the class and guide related discussions. In addition, students will study local campaigns and issues for a research project.

Coordinate and manage the San Gabriel Mountains Forever Leadership Academy, a volunteer training program with an emphasis on civic engagement, community advocacy and project management. The Leadership Academy is a project of San Gabriel Mountains Forever, a coalition working to protect and enhance our mountains, rivers and parks with access for all. Since 2011, Leadership Academy has graduated over 70 individuals and successfully executed more than 30 projects. Graduates comprise: YOUTH: 28 – 57 percent – graduates are youth – either high school or college-aged. WOMEN: 30 – 61 percent – graduates are women. LATINO: 37 – 75 percent – of graduates identify, broadly, as Latino or their country of origin: Mexico, Guatemala and Nicaragua. Another student identifies as quiche, one of Guatemala’s largest indigenous groups. IMMIGRANTS: 32 – 65 percent – of graduates are either immigrants or First Generation. Taught students effective verbal communication skills through a unique mixture of practice, communication theory and class discussion. Stand-alone instruction of CHS 100 Chicana/o Culture, an introductory course to the culture, discipline, and department of Chicana and Chicano Studies. Used a multi-disciplinary, holistic approach to investigate the Chicana/o experience from the intersection of race, class, gender, religion, and geography. The semester covered Pre-Cuauhtémoc life in the Americas up to contemporary Chicana/o life, including immigration and the Central American influence.
