I also incorporated a scanner interface to allow tickets and passports to be scanned to speed up the check-in process. CIDA was developed in Microsoft Visual Basic and Borland C++ and utilised a Btrieve database.

    I was part of the team that developed SMART, a PC-based enquiry, sales and reservations system for coach travel. SMART is a client that communicates with EXTRA II via an X25 network. Amongst other things I was responsible for developing the interface to the ATB (airline style) ticket printers, the X25 interface, a credit card sales interface utilising Electronic Funds Transfer (EFT) Software and an interface to allow reservations to be made via the Internet. SMART was developed in VB and Borland C++ and uses a Btrieve database.

    Part of a team that developed a multi-user housing maintenance system for a local government department. The system featured a distributed database linking council sites together using an X25 network. I was responsible for the development of the communications and control system programmed in C. I also developed an interface to allow the use of a front-end processor at the central site to improve data throughput.Worked on the development of NETPLAN, a system used for coach travel timetable planning and waybill accounting. NETPLAN is used by National Express Limited who are the UKs leading provider of passenger coach services. It is a large multi-user CA Ingres database system. NETPLAN exports data to many other systems including a PC based booking system (SMART), and a mainframe ViewData booking system (EXTRA II).I developed a complex and powerful database publishing extract facility that exports formatted data from NETPLAN to Adobe Framemaker to produce timetable documents. These documents include a complete timetable detailing all coach services for a six-month period. The production effort required to produce this guide has been radically reduced by the introduction of the NETPLAN system.NETPLAN was developed using the Ingres ABF, ESQL-C, RBF and SQL development tools.I worked on all areas of the NETPLAN system, but my main responsibility was the development of the travel connections calculation algorithms and the database publishing systems. I continue to work on enhancements and support of NETPLAN.
