Michael Sutton is a tirelessly innovative social entrepreneur and conservation leader with extensive experience managing nonprofit organizations, influencing public policy, advocating for environmental protection, and guiding successful philanthropic efforts. He founded and chaired the Boards of numerous nonprofit organizations and programs. He is a recognized authority on environmental law whose vision and leadership has been instrumental to the success of nonprofit organizations, foundations, and conservation initiatives in the United States and around the world.Governor Schwarzenegger twice appointed Mike as a member of the California Fish & Game Commission, where he was instrumental in creating the nation’s largest network of marine protected areas. For more than a decade, Mike also served as summer faculty at the Vermont Law School, where he taught ocean & coastal law. The second edition of his book, Ocean & Coastal Law and Policy, was published recently by the American Bar Association.Previously, Mike served as Vice President of the Monterey Bay Aquarium where he founded the Center for the Future of the Oceans, the Aquarium’s conservation advocacy arm. Before that, Mike helped establish conservation programs at the David and Lucile Packard Foundation and the World Wildlife Fund, where he founded the Marine Stewardship Council based in London. He chaired the Boards of COMPASS, a science communication organization, and Ocean Champions, the first political action committee for ocean conservation. Mike also has served on the Boards of the Wild Salmon Center, the Ocean Foundation, the Vermont Law School’s Environmental Law Program, LightHawk, and the Santa Lucia Conservancy.Mike spent more than a decade in government service, where he served as a special agent with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and as a park ranger with the National Park Service in Yosemite, Yellowstone, Biscayne, Death Valley, and Virgin Islands National Parks. Mike earned a degree in international and natural resources law from George Washington University's National Law Center in Washington, D.C.

Launched a hemispheric conservation campaign to protect seabirds and the forage fish species they depend on. Sponsored landmark legislation to outlaw the use of toxic lead ammunition for all hunting in California, the first state in the nation to take such action to protect California Condors, eagles, hawks, vultures, and other wildlife. Probably our biggest victory for the Flyway was the Federal government’s decision in 2013, prompted by a decade of effort by Audubon, to place 11 million acres of critical wildlife habitat in the National Petroleum Reserve-Alaska off limits to oil and gas drilling. -

Co-chair the Commission’s Marine Resources Committee. Elected President in 2013 for two years and in that capacity, served on the state’s Wildlife Conservation Board, making $100 million in grants each year for land conservation. During my tenure as President, I presided over key decisions such as the emergency listing of the Tricolored Blackbird as an endangered species. The Commission also completed our work to establish the nation’s largest network of marine protected areas, a decade-long effort in which the conservation community was intimately involved. We also implemented California’s landmark ban on the use of toxic lead ammunition for all hunting. Under that legislation, we became the first state in the nation to outlaw the use of lead ammunition to protect California Condors, eagles, hawks, vultures, and other wildlife.
