The L2D project grows out of the successful SysMIC initiative and features many of the same team but also many colleagues from across UCL and beyond. L2D has similar aims for the provision of quantitative and data science skills for bioscience researchers but has greater ambitions in Machine Learning and AI approaches.

The People and Talent Strategy Advisory Panel (PATSAP) is responsible for developing and maintaining UKRI-BBSRC policies to support the supply of people trained in bioscience disciplines for careers in research and innovation and in support of a scientifically articulate workforce for the wider economy.

As an active academic at a large metropolitan university I have diverse duties. I have a research group and network of collaborations for projects covering signalling biochemistry and cell biology, Raman chemical imaging for pathology and cell and developmental biology and also aspects of synthetic biology - all of which require inputs from biosciences, chemistry, physics, mathematics and data science approaches. As a teacher I organise large courses in cell biology and signal transduction. I also have significant roles in administration and undergraduate and postgraduate programmes with a special interest in interdisciplinary sciences.

The two UCL Natural Sciences bachelors BSc and integrated masters MSci programmes together are a home for about 440 talented students. Our Natural Scientists train in two complimentary scientific disciplines drawn from 15 streams of mathematics and statistics, a wide range of different physical sciences, various branches of life sciences and the history, philosophy and communication of science. I manage a demanding and competitive programme designed for the most able students and which stretches across four UCL faculties.

I have a central role in a very large BBSRC funded doctoral training partnership that unites six leading research institutions in central London. Administration of a programme with hundreds of first-class research students, and the maintenance and expansion of its ambitious portfolio of hundreds of projects, provides exciting opportunities to shape the UK discovery bioscience workforce of the future in one of the largest programmes of it's sort in the country.

SysMIC is an ambitious e-learning platform for training active bioscience researchers in mathematics, computing and statistical techniques. So far over 1,500 scientists from PhD students, post-docs, independent fellows, research group leaders and professors from academia, leading research institutes and industry have trained with SysMIC. In my role I oversee the activities of a core group of expert teachers and a wider network of contributors drawn from leading UK universities.
