Not just to educate and inspire the next generation of scientists, but to increase the scientific literacy and numeracy through society generally. How will society face up to challenges like Climate Change and Air Quality without a basic understanding of the underlying science? Develop a strategic vision for the development of Public Weather Service Delivery (PWSD) by National Met Services worldwide. Design and engage in projects aimed at improving PWSD, especially in developing countries and in vulnerable parts of the world, working both with the permanent secretariat of WMO and representatives of Member countries. Areas of particualr focus are improving the impact of forecasts and warnings of severe weather and the development of methodologies for social and economic benefit sudies of weather servcies. Work towards improving Service Delivery across the entirety of the weather enterprise - public and private - and across all disciplines; weather, climate and hydrology. Member of the Management Group of the Commission for Basic Systems, tasked with overseeing the development and management of the basic infrastructure underlying worldwide weather services.

Strategic development of weather forecast services in Ireland. Organise and maintain operational continuity of weather forecasts from the Central Analysis and Forecast Office and the Central Aviation Office of Met Eireann. Maintain active liaison with users in the Emergency Management, Media, Road Maintenance and Aviation communities to promote focused forecasting services. Work towards the development of an operational flood forecasting centre for Ireland. Manage relationships with key partner organisations, including Radio Telefis Eireann, the Office of Public Works, the Office of Emergency Planning, Transport Infrastructure Ireland, the Dublin Airport Authority, the Irish Aviation Authority, the Coastguard, the Environmental Protection Agency among others.
