The Hon. Gerald Simons, OBE is the current chairman of the Bermuda Public Accountability Board (BPAB) and was appointed to the board by the Minister of Finance in mid 2021. BPAB oversees accounting firms in Bermuda that audit Public Interest Entities (PIEs) as defined by the Bermuda Public Accountability Act of 2011.Mr. Simons is a retired insurance company executive and a former politician. In 2012 he retired from the Argus Group, a multi-line insurance company, after over 40 years of service, 12 of which were as President and CEO. Argus currently has operations in Bermuda, Canada, Gibraltar and Malta. Mr. Simons served in the legislature of Bermuda from 1982 to 1995 and was a member of the Cabinet for 11 years holding three separate portfolios: education, environment and culture.In 2018 Mr. Simons completed six years as chairman of the board of the Bermuda Monetary Authority, the integrated financial services regulator in Bermuda after nine years on the board. Over the course of his career Mr. Simons has served as a member of the board of a number of publicly traded companies including a bank and a public utility. He is the current chairman of the audit committee of the Bermuda Institute of Ocean Sciences. Mr. Simons has served as chairman or president of the Bermuda Employers’ Council, the Bermuda Insurance Institute, The Bermuda National Trust and the Bermuda Philharmonic Society. In 1996 Mr. Simons was made an officer of the Most Honourable Order of the British Empire (OBE) for service to Bermuda.Mr. Simons is married with two adult sons and enjoys gardening, golf and choral singing.
