I worked as a Medication Assistance Program extern at a UI Health outpatient pharmacy that specializes in kidney transplantations, discharge services, and specialty medication management. Actively learned and expanded my knowledge on growing areas like insurance plan coverage, 340B pricing in a hospital setting, and patient assistance resources like free drug manufacturer programs and copay cards. Some of my responsibilities included assisting a low-income, diverse patient population in obtaining access to affordable medication by initiating insurance coverage and financial review, submitting and expediting approval of applications for free medications, facilitating shipment and delivery of medications, and communicating with the healthcare team to promote a smooth patient care transition. As the program expanded, I converted the program’s patient files from paper into an electronic database to improve program workflow, created secure spreadsheets to better manage the growing patient populations’ medication refills, application enrollments, and inventory management.
