Dr. Geri Lynn Maples is a professor at Miami University and a dedicated leader in the military community. With over 20 years of experience as a military spouse and caregiver to her husband Robert, who served in both the United States Army and Ohio National Guard, Geri has a unique understanding of the challenges faced by military families. She has used her personal journey to inspire and support others, becoming a leading voice in the Ohio region for those who support the military community.As the Dayton & Southwestern Ohio Executive Director of Blue Star Families, Geri has made it her mission to assist military families in navigating the unique challenges of military life. In this role, she has made significant contributions to the military community, serving as a mentor and resource. Geri's leadership skills and expertise have also been recognized at the state and federal levels, where she served as the 2020 Elizabeth Dole Fellow for Ohio and the Vice Chair of the Strategic Ohio Council on Higher Education (SOCHE) Veterans Committee.Geri's commitment to the military community is evident in her doctoral dissertation, which was dedicated to raising awareness of the educational needs of military spouses, caregivers, and dependent children. Her work has been published as a book by Barnes & Noble and is widely regarded as a valuable resource for military families. As a professor at Miami University, Geri continues to share her knowledge and experience, inspiring and empowering her students to become leaders in their own right.     As the Executive Director, I am responsible for engaging with local supporters of military and veteran family members, creating and managing community partnerships, harnessing volunteer support, and fundraising to ensure financial sustainability for our chapter. I also provide local stories to demonstrate impact and track local metrics, cultivate relationships with local partners and donors, and maximize local collaborations with key private, public, and philanthropic organizations.Additionally, I implement strategies to convene key leaders as part of the local Blue Star Families Advisory Council, educate key community leaders using Blue Star Families’ Annual Military Family Lifestyle Survey, and seek opportunities to connect military families with the resources and programs offered by community organizations and partners. I leverage social media assets to grow our membership and improve participation, engagement, and training with the local community and military members. I create a strategic calendar that supports Blue Star Families' presence in community events, recruit, retain, and develop lead volunteers for chapter support, and attend key installation and community meetings.Working closely with the National Chapter Development Manager, I continue Chapter growth and engagement, metrics achievement, volunteer management, and event execution. As the Executive Director, I am committed to ensuring the success and sustainability of Blue Star Families of Dayton & Southwestern Ohio.

Before returning to school, I felt I knew everything there was to know. I quickly realized that wasn't true.
