About Get H.Y.P.E! Transition Framework Educators
Get H.Y.P.E! is a product of The Attic Youth Center's education and outreach department, The Bryson Institute. The Attic is Philadelphia's only LGBTQ youth center and has been serving youth since 1993. The Bryson Institute of the Attic Youth Center has been working to educate youth and adults about issues of respect and diversity since 2001.In June of 2011, a group of Attic youth, all having some experience with homelessness, foster care, and/or the juvenile justice system, gathered to learn the Transition Framework. We worked through the summer and early fall harnessing our skills and knowledge. Now, Get- H.Y.P.E! is a youth-led educational movement to create supportive and affirming environments for LGBTQ youth in the child welfare system by conducting workshops and other outreach efforts for foster and adoptive parents and child welfare professionals. Through our use of the Transition Framework we aim to help people understand the many changes that occur when a child is placed in the foster care system. Paired with an understanding of LGBTQ terms and risks facing LGBTQ youth, we hope to give people a better understanding of the emotional transition after a change, and also help parents and providers in their own transition in supporting LGBTQ youth, so that they are better able to serve youth.
