Cadca Prevention Coordinator

Gwinnett Coalition For Health & Human Services, Lawrenceville, Georgia

The director of the Gwinnett Coalition recruited me to join AmeriCorps VISTA as a facilitator for a program designed by CADCA, aimed at improving community-based support for military veterans. This role came with its challenges, as it is difficult to understand and assist a group of individuals without personally experiencing their circumstances. However, being the spouse of a US Marine Corps Vietnam combat veteran, I understand the concept of "adapt and overcome," and thus, prioritized providing current and accurate information to veterans and their families. Through my efforts as the CADCA prevention coordinator, I successfully raised awareness and garnered support from various individuals, ultimately leading to the establishment of the Gwinnett County Veterans Resource Center in January 2014.

The Purple Tulip

United States

The origins of The Purple Tulip can be traced back to my successful venture in creating awareness jewelry under the name Bead's Etc. Initially, I began by consigning my jewelry in various locations and hosting home shows. However, after some time, I was fortunate enough to be offered retail space. In a fitting tribute to my late father, I decided to name my retail business The Purple Tulip, as the last flowers I had given him before his passing were purple tulips. As demand increased and the need for more inventory became evident, it became impractical for me to solely stock handmade items. Nonetheless, my loyal customer base trusted me with repairing their cherished pieces, so I continued to offer that service. Additionally, I diversified my inventory by including handbags and commercially made necklaces, bracelets, and rings. In 2011, circumstances shifted when my husband and I became involved with the DAV, a charitable organization. This new commitment made it increasingly difficult to dedicate sufficient time to managing both the physical shop and the online presence. Nonetheless, the experience of running both the shop and web businesses was incredibly rewarding.

Beads, Etc., Inc.

United States

After the tragic events of 9/11, I found myself attending a church service where I came across a woman with an intriguing pin on her lapel. Curiosity getting the better of me, I inquired about its origins and she revealed that a friend had handmade it. The pin, crafted from a simple safety pin adorned with delicate seed beads arranged in the pattern and colors of the American flag, captivated me instantly. Determined to create something similar, I eagerly sought out the necessary materials. With time and practice, I mastered the art of constructing various sizes of these patriotic flag pins. I swiftly honed my skills in packaging, displaying, and promoting my creations, which led me to become a vendor at festivals. Encouraged by the positive response, I expanded my inventory to include other forms of awareness jewelry. Initially, I started crafting bracelets dedicated to breast cancer awareness, but the demand quickly grew, prompting me to develop an entire line encompassing every cancer awareness color, even ones designed to honor multiple types of cancer. My passion for raising awareness didn't stop there. I became heavily involved with Relay for Life, dedicating multiple years to supporting the cause. Simultaneously, I seized the opportunity to showcase and sell my designs on platforms like eBay and my personally created business website. Taking on the responsibility of website design and management allowed me to exercise my entrepreneurial spirit to the fullest.
