    I grew up in Anderson, Indiana, then a General Motors factory town. My teachers covered the leadership styles and strategies of Kings, Queens, Governors, Generals, and Presidents. We learned the history of politics and wars. But no one could answer my parallel questions about GM, which employed 27,000 people in a city of 60,000! So at the age of 12 I discovered the Fortune 500, and began a subscription to that great magazine, whose outstanding writers answered....or at least asked....many of my questions. Who started GM? Why? How did it evolve to become, at that time, the largest and greatest company in the world. A few months later, I discovered the book "My Years With General Motors," by the main man responsible for GM's success, Alfred P. Sloan. Bill Gates has said, "If you are only going to read one book about business, this is the one." From that start, I have spent my life studying the great leaders, and learning from their experiences. In virtually every industry. This later led me to dream up the idea that evolved into Hoovers.com, which traded on NASDAQ and was later purchased by Dun & Bradstreet.Our failure to learn the lessons of the past costs society billions of dollars per year.My goal is to mitigate that failure.

Then I spent 7 years as a buyer, financial planner, mergers and acquisitions analyst, strategic planner, and real estate executive for two major department store companies.I then founded BOOKSTOP, the first chain of book superstores, which was purchased in 1989 by Barnes & Noble and was the foundation for their dominance of the bookstore business.I served 5 years on the Board of Directors of Whole Foods Market during their early growth & IPO.Today I consult, speak, and teach about all aspects of retailing, and frequently blog on it on linkedin and on Hooversworld.com.I published a 200+ page PDF report on retail principles, trends, and key players in 2016.
