When this is done well, it benefits the organization on every level — from employee morale/turnover to customer satisfaction and retention. When it’s not done well, the culture of the organization deteriorates from the inside out. My focus has always been on continuous improvement…and not just in my department. I believe the only way a company can truly be successful is for all departments, all employees to align behind the same goal and help each other achieve that goal. No person should carry a heavier load than another if you are really functioning as a team. I think part of the reason I am successful is because I treat every aspect of my job with the same urgency, importance, and attention, just like I did when I ran my own business. Having this entrepreneurial background makes me more aware than most about how one seemingly small thing can have a wider impact and how every impact shows on the bottom line — for better or for worse. Initially hired as a part-time bookkeeper, in just 6 months I was promoted to Director of Operations because I stepped forward and offered assessments of the organization’s problems and recommendations for improvements. • My role changed, but throughout my tenure, I covered all departments.
