Dr. Giulio Verdini, Urbanist and PhD in Economics, Urban and Regional Development, from the University of Ferrara (2007), is Associate Professor in Urban Planning and co-convener of the Emerging Territories Research Group at the School of Architecture and Cities of the University of Westminster, in London; Visiting Professor at the Polytechnic Mohammed VI University of Ben Guerir, in Morocco, since 2019. Current Vice President of ILAUD, the International Laboratory of Architecture and Urban Design www.ilaud.org A scholar with international research experience, he was Associate Professor in Urban Planning and Design at Xi'an Jiaotong-Liverpool University, in Suzhou (2010-16 ). During his six years in China, he has moreover served as Co-Director of the Research Institute of Urbanisation at XJTLU. Previously, he was Visiting Scholar at CNRS - CECMC Centre d'etudes sur la Chine Moderne et Contemporaine in Paris, France (2012-13), Visiting Research Fellow (Alfa Program, EU-Latin America Cooperation) at the Institute of Urban Theory at Universidad de la Republica of Uruguay in Montevideo (2005). Since 2015 he regularly serves as scientific and policy advisor for UNESCO regarding the HUL (Historic Urban Landscape) Recommendation, the topic of culture and rural-urban linkages, and creative cities. He is currently member of the Working Group on 'Sustainable Urbanisation' at Union for the Mediterranean; mentor for the rural development programme of UN Tourism (former UNWTO).His main research interest is in sustainable urban development in emerging countries, with a particular focus on rural-urban linkages, rural revitalization, climate urbanism, urban heritage regeneration and management, community engagement. He applies policy design methodologies, scenario planning, and community co-design to formulate local solutions for sustainability transition. His research has been funded and supported by: Suzhou Social Science and Philosophy Foundation; Jiangsu Department of Education; Academy of Nano-Science of Gagliato; SALGA (South Africa Local Gov Association), EU COST Action, and others.
