In the Advanced Engineering team of PUNCH Torino, I was involved in the post-processing of experimental data coming from a single cylinder Hydrogen-fueled Direct Injection engine. I utilized two different pressure-based combustion diagnostics methodologies: Indicating Analysis and Multizone Analysis. The primary goal of my research activity was the development of a Python script in order to perform an Indicating Analysis to study the combustion process and cycle-to-cycle variability in innovative H2 ICE. The script conducts a two-zone analysis, generating essential combustion parameters such as Net Heat Release Rate (NHRR) and Mass Fraction Burned (MFB). It also provides outputs including Start of Combustion (SOC), End of Combustion (EOC), Start of Injection (SOI) and End of Injection (EOI): all of which are highly valuable for engine calibration activities. Additionally, the Python code performs statistical analysis on key combustion metrics, including MFB10, MFB50, MFB90 and IMEP. The scripts includes an optimizer to determine the Wiebe coefficients that generate theoretical MFB curves best fitting the experimental ones. The results of this tool were compared to those obtained from a software performing a Multizone Burning Rate Analysis. Apart from executing a more refined analysis of combustion parameters, it can calculate new quantities such as the speed of flame propagation and the NOx emission formation.
