If my career was a dating app, I’d be the queen of swiping right.But despite all my swiping, I struggled to find “The One”. Why? I was dating careers in the wrong place. And at the start of each career romance, I’d be head over heels!But as the honeymoon phase fizzled out, it was obvious we weren’t a match.I’d say, “We’re just not right for each other” before swiftly moving on without a backward glance.However, after a string of failed career romances, I could no longer avoid hard questions.- Am I a failure? - Will I be in loveless careers forever?- Is this a case of “It’s not you, it’s me”? Am I the problem?And then it hit me. I WAS the problem. I realised I was trying to find “The One” whilst being clueless about what I wanted. I had zero clarity, so I let my lust for learning and curiosity guide me instead.But no more!To find “The One”, I analysed all my career romances in painstaking detail. And after reflecting and researching, I had a startling epiphany.The 9-5 could never fulfil me. Me? Square peg. Employment? Round hole.That’s why I’d never found “The One”! I was swiping on a career app instead of an entrepreneurship app.My dream checklist:☐ Fun, fulfilling work I’m passionate about☐ Complete freedom with my time & energy☐ Meaningful, direct impact on people’s lives ☐ Scalable financial rewards based on value not timeCould only be ticked off by starting my own business.
