Senior Director Of Data Engineering
CurrentIn my position as the Senior Director of Data Engineering I have continued my previous responsibilities, adding the role of the Data Liaison for the strategic Big Fish publishing initiative. Big Fish's value proposition to publishing clients includes a best-in-class data as a service model, comprised of data platform, data engineering, data analytics, and data science functions. In the Data Liaison role I act as the point of contact both internally and externally for the combined data engineering and data science/analytics organizations (totaling 22 people).Additionally, I am part of the AI Data Working Group at the Aristocrat level (Big Fish's parent company). This working group is exploring Generative AI opportunities across the organization, with a focus on collaboration and knowledge sharing. We are covering areas such as code assistance and copilots, automated workflows, and internal data tooling in order to accelerate productivity, increase quality, and improve accessibility to data.
Director Of Data Engineering
As the Director of Data Engineering at Big Fish I'm responsible for managing headcount and budget across full time employees, offshore contractors, and expert US-based consultants, totaling 16 people on the Data Engineering team. I'm also responsible for owning vendor relationships with 3rd party software providers, including contract negotiations. We are building streamlined, cloud-base, highly automated systems that accelerate the business and provide insights directly to the business operators. I work closely with other leaders in the company across the business performance, data science, and live operations verticals to drive business value and put our data to work. I'm excited to be in the position to enable product/data analysis/business decision feedback loops that directly result in increased operational capabilities and revenue success.
Senior Manager, Data Engineering
As the leader of the Data Engineering team at Big Fish I've been breaking new ground by transforming our data pipeline with a brand new tech stack. We are in the process of moving from a mixed on-prem and cloud based pipeline with older software to a cloud-native GCP - Snowflake - Looker stack. This new data pipeline will be supporting all of Big Fish Games' products going forward, and brings exciting new capabilities to the business like near real-time streaming analytics and greater autonomy over data access and understanding.Working with a team that spans Seattle, Oakland, nearshore, and offshore resources I've been able to accelerate our time to market while delivering a high quality service to the business. This is an engaging position for me with lots of opportunities to deliver value to the organization. It also holds a lot of personal interest for me as I am continually learning more about data engineering, data science, and transforming the two into business insights and decisions.
Senior Software Engineering Manager
As a Senior Software Engineering Manager I continued all responsibilities inherent in my previous Manager position. I expanded my role into future vision and planning for the studio with new technologies and apps. I also lead the engineering effort for the new major feature (Treasures) in the flagship Big Fish Casino and Jackpot Magic Slots apps, which included working with engineers across multiple different teams, and providing the Product team with feedback and support. I took responsibility for many emergent live issues across the studio and ensured that production operations were healthy, and workflows remained smooth for our Engineering, CS, Live Ops, and Art teams.
Software Engineering Manager
I was the Manger of the Infrastructure Engineering and Tools Engineering teams at Big Fish Games' Oakland office. The Infrastructure team is responsible for monitoring server performance, creating new APIs for other development teams to consume, assisting with scaling and development of new features, and writing/supporting back-end code for multiple games. The Tools team is responsible for building and maintaining the web based admin tools used by marketing, product, customer service, art, and quality assurance teams. My responsibilities included prioritizing features requests and bugs, optimizing workflow and application issues, triaging live issues that arise, performing code reviews, and managing/mentoring the team (performance reviews, hiring, etc.). I played an active role in interfacing with other departments. I met regularly with the leads of other Engineering departments to improve company-wide practices, as well as working closely with Product, Design, and Business Intelligence to solve problems that require cross-domain knowledge. I also regularly worked with our remote Database Administrators, Operations, and Production Systems teams. In addition to managing the above two teams, I continued to work as a lead developer on the Infrastructure team. This involved architecting solutions, leading technical discussions and brainstorms, and sitting down and actually writing some code when I'm lucky. I get a lot of satisfaction from leading teams to success, but I still very much enjoy crafting software.
Senior Server Engineer
As a senior server engineer at Big Fish I maintained all of the responsibilities and roles of the Engineer II position. In addition, I took on the lead role as the primary server side engineer for a new app. This included writing most of the server code, coordinating with other teams (some remotely) including DBAs, Ops teams, and Sys Admins to ensure everything is set up for the server stack. I also worked closely with other members of the engineering department to revamp our engineering interview process.
Game Engineer Ii
As a member of the Infrastructure team, I planned and developed server side code for new game features. I created APIs and storage layers for other engineers to consume, including creating and tuning highly scalable data structures in MySQL, utilizing various Redis data types, and multiple caching layers. I was responsible for taking ownership of new features being released, from planning, development, coordinating with client side engineers, testing, and release.I participated in the on-call rotation as the first line of defense against live game issues, which included being available 24/7 to work under high pressure situations at unexpected hours. This role also included becoming familiar and comfortable working in a Unix shell environment, as well as utilizing a wide range of application monitoring tools to debug and understand issues as they occurred.
Lead Developer
Develop web resources for clients as well as IGE retail channels. Responsibilities include setting up and managing virtual private server instances, web development (server and client side) of new internet and intranet sites, and project management. Focused on building future-facing web technologies using responsive design, page speed optimization, AJAX, HTML5, and Microdata.
Full-Stack Web Developer
Responsible for creating web content for a business presence on multiple selling platforms including eBay, Amazon, Sears, Etsy, Newegg, and 11Main, as well as DealsOnly.com. Highlights include creating an intranet infrastructure for the company to enable utilization of marketplace APIs for uploading new listings, managing inventory, and retrieving business reports. Provided an advisory role to operations managers regarding web technology, SEO, data analysis, and Google Analytics.Additional projects included building a new website from scratch by creating a light CMS and a loosely coupled connection to shopping cart software, as well as overseeing web technology interns from Western Washington University.
