Working on efforts like the Ultra Ethernet Consortium and SPEC, tying together the burgeoning Confidential Computing suite of technologies, and improving the determinism of application schedulers in the thicket of Cloud Native software keeps all of us active and engaged within AMD and with the wide external Open Source communities.My experience in embedding infrastructure and application telemetry and analysis tooling into hw/sw platforms also helps the Solutions Architecture group stay at the tip of the spear on both the predictive and generative wings of AI.It's an incredibly exciting time in technology. The Cluster Platform Engineering (CPE) group at AMD has responsibility to design, build, run and evolve the company's largest AI-focused clusters leveraging the pan-AMD portfolio for both internal engineering groups and strategic customer engagement.I created and led the Software Platform Architecture (SPA) team. In this brand new global role, SPA owns the design, functionality, and operational behavior of CPE's full-stack AI platforms. SPA's design philosophy accounted for the incredible pace of innovation in AI, biasing its architecture toward readiness for change, not merely fitness for current needs. This approach cut across both Cloud Native architectures as well as the HPC designs that mirror how customer teams tackle the exploding world of AI-driven workloads.Early work focused on building the application and operational "dial-tone" - hw/sw infrastructure, SecOps tooling, an IaaS and CaaS platform, as well as the entire Data Engineering toolchain needed for AI pipelines to work in the real world. This work continues.Helped deliver a successful network automation project to form a pipeline to capture, model, manage, test, and deploy known-good network configurations for a North American, and ultimately global, portfolio of physical switches and the associated host and hypervisor OS setup to match. This project is evolving to be a Digital Twin networking platform for what SPA and CPE build.I will always have a soft-spot for the SPA group and it is in the hands of leaders I trust to take it to the next level.

The Architecture & Strategy team inside DSG serves to spot, plot, and influence technology inflection points, providing industry reconnaissance for business units across AMD. It is a futures-focused group with a "What's Coming, Where Do We Go, and How Do We Get There?" charter. Outfit with a spectrum of industry expertise and practitioner-leaders, this team tests and hammers the ties that bind the widening pan-AMD portfolio.AMD's widening portfolio (CPU, GPU, DPU), and its increased software ecosystems savvy make this an exciting place to be for a distributed systems and DevNetSecOps person like me.* In this current role I help inform and drive M&A considerations focusing on the Platform Engineering and AI software ecosystems spaces.* I've helped lead the design of a multi-tenant, multi-site, multi-geography, and multi-cloud hardware and software systems platform targeted at the varying needs of AMD's wide engineering and field-engaged teams. This ongoing effort leverages my lifetime of backend infrastructure and software systems work - whether on-premises or cloud - and helps bring it all together for AMD. It continues to be one of my favourite projects of all time.* As an international company, at AMD I help bind the North American and European customer and field teams ensuring my focus on Cloud Native architectures is both shared and informed by those on both sides of the Atlantic.

As a technology ecosystems-focused member of the Chief Technology and Innovation Office I drove two major sections of the team's overall mandate:* As a Software Platform Architect to investigate, design and build brand new solution-focused software platforms, pushing their technical capabilities and operational models to represent the best of current and next-generation approaches * My project work was upstream and non-public, and meant to sufficiently prepare solutions for Product Engineering teams to round out and take to market * I drove internal, partner, and customer technical conference discussions to ensure investigations are informed by and connected to the right constituents* I evaluated startups in the Cloud Native and Ops sectors, their technologies, and their position and participation in various related Open Source communities * My evaluations fed investment and acquisition team decisions and activities

The server BU CTO team evaluated and helped create the compute-focused future for this industry #1 business inside Dell Technologies.On this CTO team, I focused on taking new and under development infrastructure across the organization's and partners' portfolios and married it with the revolutions happening in software architecture and operations to see where the cracks surfaced.I looked at it as adding the software peanut butter to the rest of the CTO team's hardware chocolate.* Across 2018 and 2019 I led architecture and DevNetSecOps tooling from the Dell EMC side for a Kubernetes-based platform, leveraging partner DAX-mode Data Center Persistent Memory Modules (DCPMM) and NVMeoF technologies to drive NUMA-local compute and I/O to enable extremely high IOPS data-focused workloads* In early 2016 I was part of a small group from the Dell CTO team leading the first EMC CTO interlocks as plans were built on how to integrate the portfolio and technologies for this important Dell acquisition- Dell's purchase of EMC was the technology industry's largest acquisition in history at the time and I'm proud of my role in its earliest stages and integration effortsThis was an excellent team and I am very pleased to have worked with everyone on it.

I anchored technology, trends, architecture, and operations discussions as the connecting bridge among executive and technical teams internally and with many of Dell's largest global customers.I was the go-to lead in discussions covering containerization and new application orchestration technologies like Kubernetes. I developed and led training for internal development teams and customers working to understand application and platform operations at scale.I was the lead Enterprise Architect in a large joint initiative between Dell and a top-4 global Systems Integrator focused on Private and Hybrid Cloud solutions.

I drove visibility into the architectural and operational benefits as well as the nature of Cloud Computing to thousands of Dell's internal and customer-facing employees.As a technologist with focus on Cloud Platforms both Private and Hybrid, I led internal and customer workshops on automation and orchestration across the data centre and beyond.This Cloud role helped me see and build strategies to tackle the accelerated evolution of "TechOps Tetris" - where organizations align the moving pieces of technology, business, and operations and codify how to pivot earlier when relevant changes in any of them begin to happen.

As an Enterprise Technologist, I represented the company's infrastructure portfolio in IT strategy conversations with customer executive teams, provided a Dell interface to their architects, and spoke at domestic and international IT industry events on how and why to adopt new infrastructure architectures and operational models.My personal role provided connective tissue among the activities of three crucial groups: Dell's largest customers, our internal product development teams, and the broad open-source communities as those efforts increasingly influenced the direction of technology overall.This role provided excellent perspective and lessons I still apply today.

My team and I owned the entire life-cycle of technology: from vision statements through Enterprise Architecture, solution selection, implementation, maintenance and monitoring, and decommission across many generations of technologies. This exposed challenges core to IT such as designing processes optimized for change and visibility not just fidelity.A company that grew through consistent acquisition, Russel Metals provided strong proof of the financial value to having a flexible IT team and technologies.Joining as an individual contributor, I rose to lead the department's core group of architects, ultimately establishing and regularly validating formalized Business Continuity and Disaster Recovery (BC/DR) protocols to iteratively improve the organization's ability to sustain itself in the event of operational challenges and failures.I established a Computer Security Incident Response Team (CSIRT) methodology and operational model, as well as instrumented the applications and infrastructure to inform security systems and decisions.Russel Metals was an outstanding experience.

ZENON Environmental was a leading global water purification bio-technology firm supporting military and commercial efforts to address potable, medical, and desalinization water treatment needs at mobile scale.I engineered and managed all technical infrastructure across its North American and European locations, established VPN technologies to support chemical engineers in the field all over the world, and built an Internet and open source-driven digital presence, readying this bio-tech firm for their digital future.Growing and leading the Information Systems team put rigor to process and allowed a small group to handle the rapid growth of this successful company.ZENON was acquired by General Electric in 2006.
