My post-doctoral research focused on the generation of hematopoietic cells from human pluripotent cells as a means to model human disease. I was particularly focused on the impact of human trisomy 21 on human hematopoiesis; both from the perspective of affecting lineage commitment, and modeling of a pre-leukemic state in vitro. During this project, I introduced human PSC culture methods to the lab, and -Established lab protocols for culture of human ES cells, and derivation and maintenance of human iPS cells-Performed in vitro differentiation of human pluripotent stem cells to generate hematopoietic cells of specific lineages including megakaryocytes, erythrocytes, neutrophils, B cells and T cells-Used differentiated ES/iPS cells to identify abnormalities in hematopoiesis in trisomy 21 cells. Gene expression profiling was performed to elucidate genetic effects of trisomy 21 that contributed to phenotypic perturbations.These studies established robust models for in vitro interrogation of human hematopoiesis, and resulted in five manuscripts, and two successfully funded fellowship applications

Supervised a total of 10 undergraduate thesis or summer students. Conceived projects for students, provided daily supervision in laboratory techniques and data analysis, and assisted students in preparation of data for oral and written presentation.

I taught an "Introduction to Molecular Biology" course to classes of 20 visiting high school students (2 sessions per year). I originally designed the 1 week course (35 hours) for high school students which introduced them to basic concepts in molecular biology as they visited Queen's University
