"Threatened and Recently-Extinct Vertebrates of the World: A Biogeographic Approach” 2023)
The Forgotten Species Project is a new initiative related to my most recent book, "Threatened and Recently Extinct Vertebrates of the World" (Cambridge University Press, 2023). Essentially, the idea is to take a second look at all "Data Deficient," "Least Concern" and "Not Evaluated" vertebrate taxa on the IUCN Red List (we hope to expand into plants and invertebrates after that), and to make that information available to all on my website, "Threatened Species of the World." Where a taxon is suspected to be possibly threatened, the appropriate Species Survival Group will be notified and asked to investigate as soon as possible. This is not meant to be a criticism of their work in any way, but as we all know, taxonomic splitting in particular has resulted in a large number of taxa languishing, often for years, without a more detailed assessment. Many are confined to a small number of localities, thereby raising red flags immediately. The project itself will also encompass research into biogeography and the identification of priority areas for conservation.
