I have always been passionate about studying nature and promoting its protection through active field work teaching, and writing. I have a strong background in wildlife field research, professional nature guiding, nature writing and ecological restoration. Field work has included ichthyological surveys of the Ohio and Allegheny rivers, Central American River turtle or "hickatee" (Dermatemys mawii) conservation work in Belize, vertebrate monitoring in the Peruvian Amazon, and forest health assessment/vegetation monitoring in Prospect Park, NY. After receiving my MS in Wildlife and Fishery Sciences, I worked as a wildlife guide for seven years in Grand Teton and Yellowstone National Parks, and learned first hand the incredible value in bringing people experiential contact with wildlife and nature. I also became an educational content creator for guiding companies, creating training materials for guides. Prior to all of this, I served for a brief period as a journalist on Long Island, for which I won Rookie Reporter of the Year from the LI Press Club. Although I decided after this year to get my MS, I continued writing freelance articles for several wildlife and aquarium hobby publications, as well as for some of the organizations for which I had done field work. During my time in the Yellowstone area, I served as Communication Director for the grassroots wolf conservation organization Wolves of the Rockies, and later Communication Coordinator for the Turtle Survival Alliance.In 2016, I came to Prospect Park in Brooklyn NY, where I began a completely new conservation direction: urban ecology. Six years late I am now Senior Forest Ecologist and actively working on ecological restoration, biodiversity conservation, and integrated urban wildlands management in the heart of one of the most densely populated cities in the United States. Most of my wildlife work is now on behalf of the most important yet least appreciated creatures on Earth--insects-- as I create, monitor, and manage pollinator areas, within a larger long term framework of climate adaptive forest management and habitat connections.
