As an Industrial statistician, I was asked to study the process to come up with optimizations, which I did by spending weeks at the manufacturing line, talking to the shop floor people and the area coordinators, understanding the processes and creating a Defect Control process, identifying the biggest detractors to Quality and offering the company, the root causes for product rejection by Quality Engineering, as well as establishing a culture of metrics. In the beginning, Manufacturing was really upset about being "audited" but the results were so interesting that they adopted my controls. Very interesting job.
