During these nine years, I have transitioned from an entry level role focused on grants management and capital accounting to a managerial role responsible for managing a $400+ million operating budget for the San Diego Metropolitan Transit System. My key competencies include Financial Planning & Analysis, Operations and Capital Budgeting/Forecasting, Financial Reporting, Grants Management, Accounting, Project Management, and Communication with a variety of stakeholders, ranging from collaboration with individual departments to presenting monthly financial status updates to Senior Management and the Board of Directors. I consider myself a collaborative self-manager, meaning I take great pride in learning, growing, and performing my duties with minimal supervision or external motivation required; however, I attribute most of my personal growth (past and future) to collaboration and working with others. Specifically, I place great value in listening to others, learning from senior mentors, working with various departments to accomplish common goals, and the development that comes through sharing information and ideas with other people. My passion for excellence and work ethic are apparent throughout my work history detailed below. Manager Of Financial Planning & Analysis
Operating Budget Supervisor
As the Operating Budget Supervisor, my primary responsibilities include managing the development of the annual operating budget, financial analysis, publishing monthly/yearly financial reports, and presenting monthly/annual financial status reports to the CFO, CEO, and the Board of Directors. I am also actively involved in managing MTS’s energy programs, including expense/revenue forecasting, contract management, and value creation related to natural gas, electricity, and propane markets. I work alongside the Director of FP&A to manage MTS' participation in a variety of state and federal energy credit programs in order to maximize our financial return. We are currently generating over $8M per year in net revenue by effectively navigating/managing these complex programs. Most recently, we identified an opportunity to purchase Renewable Energy Credits (RECs) to purchase the “green” attributes of solar/wind generated electricity in order to generate additional energy credit revenue compared to standard grid electricity. This new process has resulted in a net increase to annual revenues of +$700K. In addition to these recurring duties, I am also responsible for performing a variety of ad-hoc analysis and miscellaneous projects, such as costing union negotiations for HR, serving as lead analyst for negotiating a ~$1 billion transportation contract, and serving as Project Manager for the $700K agency-wide copier maintenance and capital replacement contract. My primary goals in this role are to always keep learning, continue to develop my skills in financial planning/analysis, enhance my understanding of the “big picture” and strategic decision making, and to continue to build relationships where I can learn from others and hopefully be able to contribute to someone else’s growth as other people have contributed to mine. I currently have one direct report and look forward to growing in my capacity of helping/coaching others.
Financial Analyst
This role marked a significant shift in my focus area, away from Capital & Grants to the world of the operating budget. I was in this role for less than a year, learning about the operating budget, conducting budget to actual reporting, performing a variety of ad hoc analysis, assisting with the development of the annual operating budget, and sharing information across the agency with a variety of stakeholders. Learning is the keyword in the description above.
Capital & Grants Analyst
This was really a two-part role that focused on two key areas: Grants Management and Capital Budgeting/Accounting. In this role, I was responsible for managing all grant administration activities. This included the identification of new funding opportunities, developing proposals, post-award financial reporting, and ultimately organizing/leading the response to external audits. I was also responsible for all grant, capital project, and fixed asset accounting functions. Furthermore, I worked closely with my Supervisor on the development of the agency-wide annual Capital Improvement Program (CIP) budget. My key achievements during my three years in this role were:• Setting the record for the highest discretionary grant award in company history on multiple occasions ($18M award for bus replacement and then $39M for light rail expansion)• Finished two Federal Transit Administration (FTA) Triennial Audits with zero findings, a rare achievement in the public transit industry• During transition from old ERP system to SAP, led the blueprinting, testing, and cutover activities for Grants Management Module and Fixed Asset Accounting Module; also had strong supporting role with implementation of Project Systems Module• Developed and implemented new accounting procedures for grants and fixed asset month-end and year-end close process that are still in use today• Created the first ever comprehensive training/procedure manual, a 138 page document, for Grants Management at MTS. This was based solely on my own initiative and I was never asked to do this.• Developed new year-end fixed asset reconciliation methodology that shifted the year-end accounting responsibilities from Staff Accountants to myself, significantly reducing the effort required by the Accounting team during the busy year-end process.• Exercised complete ownership of these areas as an Analyst and went above and beyond job description duties with minimal oversight required
Shipping/Receiving Administrator
Primary responsibilities included maintaining accurate records of all inventory changes in SAP ERP software, shipping and receiving high volume of products using UPS and Ontrac shipping software, processing vendor recalls/RTWs/stock balances/returns, communication with department heads to ensure completion of daily/weekly tasks, resolving customer service issues through communication with corporate office and customers, and ultimately providing excellent customer service.
