Engineering Director Goss Innovations Ltd. Goss Innovations is a CAD design consultancy originating in 2000 as a design office under the ‘Goss Challenges’ umbrella to utilise the skills and workforce assembled by Pete Goss for the Team Philips round the world racing catamaran project. Towards the end of this project, I was invited to join as a Director bringing to the team mechanical engineering experience and an in depth knowledge of Unigraphics. Although the Team Philips project has now ended, Goss Innovations has remained in Totnes with myself as Engineering Director along with my wife Lesley Goss as Managing Director. We have established ourselves as engineering design suppliers to blue chip engineering customers in the UK and Europe, with clients in many sectors, including aerospace, automotive, renewable energy and pharmaceutical. Ge Renewable Energy (Formerly Tidal Generation Limited)

The company develops Tidal Turbines for generating electricity using offshore tidal currents. It was a start-up company at Bristol University, was then bought by Rolls Royce, who sold it to Alstom Ocean, and it has now been bought by GE. A prototype has been successfully demonstrated off Orkney and the company is now working towards a pilot farm of turbines to be installed in the Raz Blanchard between Cherbourg and the Channel Islands. British Gas Heat Networks

This company was formerly Econergy until it was acquired by British Gas and provides turnkey solid fuel heating installations for commercial projects including schools, hospitals, blocks of flats etc. Our brief was to design a modularised building for containing the equipment. The concept needed to be more economical to manufacture than the design they were using, be road transportable with the main equipment fitted in the factory, and quick to install on site, preferably able to be water tight within a day. The Welding Institute

Designed and manufactured a prototype product aimed at the rail industry. The Welding Institute had developed a new technique for inspecting rails for damage and asked for it to be incorporated into a portable and easily used device. The device needed to place 8 sensors very accurately around the profile of a rail, and clamp into place but at the same time be very quick to remove and easy to carry. The final device looked a bit like a traditional tool box, and moving the handles down positioned and clamped the device to the rail. We supplied a prototype device ready for testing.

Excel Packaging

Designed built and tested a machine for applying foil to under floor heating insulation boards. The boards have grooves cut into the top surface for the heating pipes to be pressed into. They are also covered with a metal foil and this must follow the surface of the pipe grooves. It was this which made the machine we developed unique. The machine was successfully developed and then delivered and installed in the factory, after which we ran a one day training and demonstration day. The product is called Profoil,

Rolls Royce

Creating highly parametric rule based assembly models of jet engine combustion modules. The immediate aim of this project is to provide a library of quickly scaleable typical combustion assemblies that can be used to evaluate proposed engine designs quickly and efficiently This project won the division’s quality award for best project of the year in 2008. The project is now being rolled out to other divisions of Rolls Royce globally. The longer term aim of the project will be to incorporate these NX models into a Knowledge Based Engineering tool that will combine many of the software tools currently used into a coherent system capable of iterative design optimisation.

Volvo Construction Equipment

Designing parts of Volvo’s new backhoe loader the BL70, including structural design, packaging, helping to solve production issues, and casting design. Much of the project concerned the design of highly loaded welded fabrications, balancing the performance of the machine against the fatigue life of major structural components. Part of the project was to design a cab installation of servo controls for the excavator. This was a ‘design and make’ project, providing four options as rough mock-ups, two were selected for further development and taken to ‘working designs’ before the final selection was taken to production.
