About Grace Pidwill
I am an associate medical writer at Open Health Communications.I have a PhD from the University of Bristol and I have subsequently worked as a Postdoctoral Research Associate at the University of Sheffield. My special area of interest to date has been the molecular mechanisms by which microorganisms interact with the host and with other microbes, and the effect that this has on the host and subsequent disease.I am experienced in cell culture, including isolation and culture of monocyte-derived macrophages, and have developed in vitro microbial virulence assays. I have investigated the host response to infection, utilising both in vitro and in vivo techniques, including infection models, ELISAs, RT-PCR, global analysis of host proteome and microscopy.

Investigating the mechanism behind augmentation of S. aureus virulence, which is the phenomenon by which commensal bacteria protect S. aureus from immune cell-mediated killing. This project utilised murine infection models as well as in vitro macrophage infection and microscopy techniques.

I discovered a synergistic relationship between C. albicans and GBS. Association and invasion of vaginal epithelial cells by GBS was promoted by C. albicans, and vice versa, with this iInteraction partially dependent on binding between C. albicans adhesin Als3 and GBS Bsp proteins. Furthermore, dual species infection resulted in a downregulation of host proteins relating to microbial control.
