Who are you and where are you from? In English this is a question which can be portrayed in a very different light then it is for other cultures. It is a question which affects how we treat one another and the perceptions we have of individuals. In my native language it is often about the way which people are neglected and treated more or less fairly. It is about what should or should not be given.In my time working I have faced many challenges but these challenges always come with new questions, needs, and excitement. It is a constant push and pull to understand the world around me. One of the privileges that I have had is to explore the world from many angles. I have had the opportunity to work with individuals with developmental disability's to build their skills and tolerance, I have managed teams of over 100 and helped to ensure that each person in that space was taken care of and able to preform their job, and I have worked with communities in foreign countries to understand who they are and what they need. All of these opportunities has brought me something new to understand of the world. In English the question who are you and where do you come from has many connotations which carry a lot of negative weight. While working with the Gaelic communities in Scotland though, I learned to carry this phrase in a different light. I have learned to appreciate the perspectives that each place and space has to offer and bring this into all aspects of my life. I think speaking about my skills with qualitative and quantitative data sets, my ability to track orders and sales, and my knowledge on the theoretical pieces of my work provides very little to my actual ability to do any job. These things can be taught. What cannot be taught is the understanding, care, and inquiry it takes to really build a community out of a broken system. To create a a system within which individuals can thrive.
