In my current role I am the Farm Systems Analyst for Rezare Systems. Rezare Systems is a specialist IT company serving the needs of the agricultural industry. We have developed and maintain many of the standard platforms used in NZ agricultural decision support including - OVERSEER - Used by Ballance and Ravensdown to generate fertiliser recommendations- Sheep Improvement Limited (SIL) genetic evaluation system, - Farmax a whole farm modelling tool now used by over 70% of farm consultants to provide farm management advice,- Pure farming - An individual animal recording system for sheep and beef farmers.Rezare Systems has in-depth knowledge of how data flows through agricultural systems including specialist skills in modelling and mathematics. These skills are evident in industry platforms as:- Farmax Dairy - a whole farm model that can predict milk flows, cow condition, pasture covers and be used to optimise short and longer term management strategies.- The pasture growth forecaster - recently released this predicts pasture growth rates for the whole of New Zealand from climate forecasts delivering a service to over 2000 farm businesses.- The Woolbook - an analytical tool for fine wool growers to evaluate their wool clip.- Discovery - a tool for sheep farmers who wish to change breed types or optimise the breed they have providing comparative financial outcomes.Rezare has considerable database engineering knowledge and has been at the forefront in developing:- SIL - the geneic evaluation of crossbred sheep with a database over over a billion recorded traits- FarmIQ - The development of the pilot database used to individually record sheep and beef performance from farm to processor.- Pure farming - an individual sheep and beef recording system launched through Gallaghers in NZ and as StockTrace in the UK.Through these projects Rezare Systems has become NZ's leading supplier of agricultural IT services. We have a base of 28 software developers.

Ogle Consulting (OC) specialises in farm systems analysis. OC works from the ground up. OC works with individual farmers (around 40 in each island) to analyse their systems and most importantly find systems and farm policies that significantly improve net worth. I specialise in industry projects with sectors that seek greater returns from chain participants. OC uses farm modelling tools many of which my parent company (Rezare Systems Ltd) has developed the software itself. As an example OC recent projects include:- The role of lucerne in dryland finishing systems - Working in the formative stages with NZ change agents such as Derek Moot (Lincoln University) and Doug and Fraser Avery and David and Lisa Anderson (Farm businesses) Lucerne area has increase NZ wide by 500%- Working with ECAN (Canterbury Regional Council) and Horizons (Taranaki Regional Council)OC provided the calculation of nitrogen and phosphorus loss into waterways and developed mitigation strategies that have contributed to regional regulation standards. - Feasibility of establishing a 4,800 cow dairy farm in the Upper Waitaki. - Evaluation of the transition pathways of various breeds to a new sheep breed being developed by the New Zealand Merino Company through a genomics and performance recording project.- The role of Russell lupins in transforming high aluminium soils on high country systems. This project resulted in hundreds of sites now assessing local benefits.- Developing high performance areas on NZ hill country (through a Beef and Lamb New Zealand initiative based from the Nelson's farm business). This project sets a new bar for hill country farms with cultivatable are that cannot grow Lucerne.OC take pride in the scientific approach - stating the questions to be answered, developing robust methodology and delivering carefully analysed of results. While commercially focussed and delivering commercial technical reports OC has taken the time to publish over 20 scientific papers.

In this position I was responsible for working with AgResearch's science team to bring through IT solutions to external customers. Together with the science team our specialist capabilities included modelling, mathematics, and specialist agricultural knowledge of how agricultural systems operate. We were responsible for commercialising knowledge, algorithms, models and expert systems developed by AgResearch's fantastic science machine. Notable successes that are industry platforms today are:- OVERSEER Nutrient budget used by/on most pastoral enterprises in NZ.- Farmax farm modelling system - a mathematical model of sheep/beef and dairy farms.- Sheep Improvement's genetic database - Housing 90% of all sheep breeders genetic worth.- Endeavour farming recording system - The first significant map-based farm recording system.- Predictor - A model of carcass weight change used to manage optimal carcass meat yield and the resulting fat depth.

In this role I studied the effects rabbits have on farm systems and mitigation strategies in the semi arid lands of the New Zealand high country. It was clear there was little understanding of the biological process of both rabbits and the extensive, native grassland. The latter made up 67% of farm production output.I developed Ogle Consulting (OC) which worked one-on-one with farmers. In conjunction with Ben Aubrey a local farmer we developed the Merino Group. This group has now operated for 15 years and through a careful monitoring program developing the only physical systems production information for this niche industry. OC has facilitated the Merino Group for the past 15 years. The data and analysis has underpinned the New Zealand Merino Company's science plan for their significant Primary Growth Partnership fund that totalled $14 million. Being involved as a scientist with Landcare Research introduced me to systems modelling. My work resulted in an invitation to manage AgResearch's 'outward facing' software development group. This evolved into the formation of Rezare Systems, a pure agricultural software development company and Ogle Consulting, a pure systems analysis company.
