Better Public Services: Result 9 – Better Public Services for Business is a cross-government initiative to improve the quality and efficiency of interactions between government and businesses.The close involvement of business stakeholders is critical to ensure the programme prioritises effort that will make the biggest difference to business.The Result 9 programme will focus on the agencies that businesses interact with most often: Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment (MBIE); Inland Revenue; the Accident Compensation Corporation (ACC); Statistics New Zealand; New Zealand Trade and Enterprise (NZTE) and New Zealand Customs Service.The Result 9 programme is supported by a secretariat based in the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment and is resourced from across the government agencies involved. It is managed by a Steering Group chaired by Greg Patchell, Deputy Chief Executive – Market Services, Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment.The Steering Group is responsible for governing the programme and reports to the Result 9 Chief Executives Group, chaired by David Smol, Chief Executive of the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment.The Business Insight Board comprises business representatives from New Zealand’s business community.

The Small Business Advisory Group (SBAG) is an advisory board that makes recommendations directly to the NZ Minister of Small Business, Maurice Williamson and now John Banks, on behalf of small businesses. I was appointed, in part, for my perspective and expertise in information technology and exports.As a board member of SBAG, I attend meetings six times annually, and review new policies and proposals throughout the year. In this role, I am required to work across the board to synthesise information and arrive at solutions that are most beneficial to New Zealand’s small businesses. I then communicate my analysis to government leaders in a clear, concise and convincing manner.

The UC Centre for Entrepreneurship (UCE) - UCE runs a 10-week accelerator programme to enable students to fast-track their ideas (for-profit or social enterprise) towards commercial reality. For most students in the programme this is the first time that they have started a new venture. Thus, the summer programme is structured to help students develop capabilities in entrepreneurship and innovation. Each week the programme is based around a theme e.g. defining the problem or unmet need, understanding the customer and market validation. At the end of the 10 weeks, students will have covered the key elements of a successful new venture.The overarching framework for the programme is the lean business methodology (i.e. lean canvas, business model canvas, and lean start-up). Students are encouraged over the 10- weeks to focus on market validation to determine the viability of their concept.

Science Alive! is a not-for-profit science and technology centre dedicated to promoting the value of science and technology to the public.My role on the Board is primarily focused around the rebuilding and redevelopment of a new Science Centre following its destruction after the 2011 Earthquake. I also support the CEO on strategic digital marketing initiatives.

As a committee member of Export New Zealand, I work to promote the organisation’s objectives of increasing education about exporting and providing support for exporters. As a member of this committee, I attend monthly meetings and work with a team to organise seminars and speakers that will promote the goals of Export New Zealand.

Since 2008, I have been a member of the Nightside Test Design Ltd Advisory Board. In this role I have provided support to the senior management of the company (which provides businesses with test engineering solutions) by developing and recommending growth initiatives and sales plans to help their business succeed.

Qualifications in Business (at levels 1-6, excluding university qualifications) are scheduled for review in 2012 as part of the nation-wide mandatory review of qualifications. Currently there is a wide range of qualifications in Business (and in several other areas) with many apparently similar qualifications at the same level.The mandatory review is to reduce the duplication and proliferation of qualifications on a national scale, and to ensure that qualifications are useful, relevant and valuable to current and future learners, employers and other stakeholders.
