While in McNair, I developed an independent qualitative research study that explored the experiences of Emerging Adults who were GLB (Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual) and homeless. After reviewing the literature, I created a basic set of core questions, which guided one-on-one interviews that I conducted with over 10 participants. I presented these results at the National Association of Social Work- South Carolina Chapter in April of 2016; I led a workshop to current practitioners to expand their knowledge about working with this population. As my research continued, I allowed the voices of my participants to guide my work. Through my previous study, I had the opportunity to work with individuals from some of the most marginalized populations. I discovered that what I was finding in my research and what the literature portrayed were not cohesive. My participants were exceedingly resilient, whereas the literature portrayed them as anything but. Most importantly, I found the literature to be whitewashed. My previous study examined experiences of all gay, bisexual and lesbian individuals without accounting for how race, class, and HIV status played a role in these experiences. The following summer, I conducted another independent qualitative study where I explored the concept of Intersectionality. Specifically, I examined how different minority identities compounded and intersected to create both resiliency and health disparities for same-sex identifying men of color who are homeless and HIV positive. My research is unique in that it also examines “homeless identity” and “HIV Identity.” Throughout both projects, I networked with several HIV/Aids agencies in many parts of the Carolinas to identify and interview potential participants.
