The Adjudication Unit provides an independent review of tax disputes between taxpayers and the Commisioner of Inland Revenue.Company InformationThe Office of the Chief Tax Counsel's (OCTC) function is to provide guidance on the correct interpretation of the Inland Revenue Acts and other relevant laws, and by considering case law. The Adjudication Unit is part of the OCTC that deals with tax disputes. It reviews essentially all tax disputes with a view to resolving tax disputes at an early stage to reduce the number of litigated cases.Key Responsibilities • Manage a small team of senior solicitors each reviewing a tax dispute• Work closely with team members to determine which party to the dispute had the best interpretation of the law• Provide guidance and review the report produced showing the reasoning and outcome of the review• Make any assessments of the taxpayer required as a result of our reviewKey Achievements• Successfully developed a number of solicitors and seen them progress into more senior roles• Regularly and consistently met and exceeded targets both in quantitative and qualitative terms over a number of years• Worked on a number of highly complex projects and brought these to successful conclusions• Been a key driver behind introducing plain English to OCTC and developing a training programme on critical thinkingKey Projects• Income tax consequences for a Life Insurer involving reinsurance and retrocession• Income tax treatment of expenditure incurred in gold mining under the mineral mining regime• Income tax and Goods & Services tax (GST) treatment of various assets owned by a property developer
