Served in the US Navy for a four-year enlistment mostly in San Diego as a welder, metal worker, plumber doing overall repair and maintenance aboard two large US Navy ships. Both ships included a crew of around 500 sailors and 700 marines when on deployment. The ships I worked on were the USS Somerset (LPD 25) and a 7-month deployment aboard the USS Comstock (LSD 45). While in the Navy broken equipment was repaired with few resources, patience was gained, and problems were solved utilizing critical thinking. My primary skills included basic repair work utilizing SMAW/TIG welding, oxyacetylene brazing (mostly copper pipe), sheet metal work, and plumbing. I left the military honorably with the title of Hull Technician Petty Officer Third Class (HT3SW).
