In 2012 I was peer-elected to lead a team of 16 mechanical and electrical engineering students on a 9 month senior design project. Our team was contracted by Corning Cable Systems to research and design a system to improve the lack of controls of fiber optic cable connectors on their assembly line. As leader, I managed a $12,000 project budget, set project deadlines, orchestrated testing and prototyping, assigned tasks to team members, contacted local vendors and created the order of operations for the final assembly. I grew tremendously in my foresight of issues and understanding of complex assembly processes. At the end of the project, our team delivered a working prototype under budget and meeting all of the design specifications. Our prototype successfully reduced the number of defects in the cable assemblies and is projected to save approximately $11 million dollars annually if distributed worldwide to replace the current systems. In addition, four team members and myself presented the project to an audience of Corning executives and TCU faculty as well as at the April meeting of the Texas Society of Professional Engineers in Fort Worth, TX.
Mechanical Engineer Intern
In my internship with Corning, I was tasked to design and building an automated machine to precisely strip fiber optic cables at various locations. To accomplish this, I designed an pneumatically actuated device to be run by a PLC controller. To ensure the system would work as needed, testing was conducted to measure the forces needed to hold the cable in place, cut through the protective casing and sheer off the unwanted casing to expose the internal fiber. To do this, three control tests were constructed to model each motion and accurately measure the necessary forces. From these tests the parameters for the desired pneumatics were found and the design could move forward with confidence. The final design was an assembly of roughly 20 components made to bolt together as easily as possible. All machined components were consulted by the shop machinist to ensure they could be made at minimal cost. In addition, much care was taken to reduce the time required to maintenance the machine since it would ultimately back up production. Although the design was just the first prototype, it is my belief that little change will be necessary to achieve a fully operational device.
Manufacturing Engineer Intern
I worked part time for Weatherford International as a Manufacturing Engineer Intern. In the two and a half years of working under a Project Manager, Professional Engineer and Manufacturing Engineer, I was presented with opportunities to learn and grow as both an engineer and a reliable team communicator. In my second year of work I created detailed CAD models of existing Wireline oil well plugging tools and uploaded them into the network for global access. The tools were highly redundant and I consolidated the tools to approximately half the original number, resulting in reduced complexity of the product line as well as the number of stock part variations at the facility.
