About Grant Smith

At Macquarie for 28 years, Grant's current role is Executive Chair and Senior Managing Director, Macquarie Infrastructure & Real Assets Australia/NZ. The Real Assets division of MAM comprises our investment and asset management activities across Infrastructure, the Green Investment Group, Natural Assets and Private Equity.Grant is responsible for strategic transactions and assets, key stakeholders and business development, across Macquarie's Real Assets business. He sits on a range of investment committees and boards within Macquarie Asset Management.Until Nov 2022, Grant's immediate past role was Head of Infrastructure - Australia for Macquarie Infrastructure & Real Assets (MIRA). In that role, Grant led the expansion of MIRA's Australian infrastructure investment business from approx. A$ 3 billion of assets under management in 2015 to approx. A$30 billion by 2023, with 16 portfolio companies across the transport, energy, waste, digital, fibre and data infrastructure sectors. Grant was also CEO of MIRA's separate managed account business and instrumental in establishing several global, regional and Australian-based funds for MIRA.Prior to his move to Macquarie Asset Management, Grant was an Executive Director in the global Principal Investment Area (“PIA”) of Macquarie Capital between 2002 and 2007. The PIA is responsible for managing Macquarie Capital’s global principal investment portfolio. Upon initial establishment in 2002, the PIA was responsible for facilitating the acquisition of the seed assets globally which led to the creation of Macquarie's infrastructure asset management funds in Europe, North America and Asia-Pacific. During Grant’s tenure, the Group acquired, managed and disposed of over A$7 billion in infrastructure, mid-risk and private equity investments on behalf of Macquarie, in the toll roads, airports, telecoms, water, rail, energy, utilities and industrials sectors. While in this role, Grant also assisted Nicholas Moore, then head of investment banking group ("IBG"), with IBG's annual strategic planning and corporate initiatives. Upon joining Macquarie as a graduate, Grant was a corporate adviser in Macquarie Corporate Finance for 5 years, advising clients across both private and public M&A and ECM transactions in a range of industry sectors. Prior to joining Macquarie, Grant worked at law firm Mallesons Stephen Jaques in both Corporate & Commercial and Intellectual Property.
