As the Health Policy Coordinator with Adagio Health's Tobacco Prevention and Control Program, I worked with a team dedicated to preventing and reducing tobacco use and increasing education about tobacco hazards and secondhand smoke throughout Southwestern Pennsylvania. I provided technical assistance to businesses, organizations, and municipalities to review and update tobacco-free policies to reduce exposure to secondhand smoke in spaces where people live, work, learn, and play. I advocated for tobacco prevention and control funding to regional legislators and wrote articles educating the public on the harmful impacts of tobacco and nicotine. I recruited, managed, trained, and supported subcontractors tasked with enforcing tobacco retailer laws preventing youth from purchasing cigarettes from licensed tobacco retailers.I researched the intersection of tobacco retailer density and public health outcomes in rural and urban communities throughout Southwestern Pennsylvania for a presentation that was accepted by a national public health conference on tobacco and health in New Orleans, LA.

I supported efforts by the Mayor of Wilkinsburg to reduce violent crime and improve zoning regulations to encourage community-conscious business investment in the Borough of Wilkinsburg from 2018 to 2019. I helped identify disparities and deficiencies in current zoning and criminal justice policy as they relate to community-sustaining economic investment opportunities, violence reduction, and police/community relations.During this internship, I presented on how local zoning policy reforms can encourage community-sustaining economic investment and improve public health outcomes for residents facing diagnoses of hypertension, hyperlipidemia, obesity, and diabetes using ArcGIS mapping tools. Additionally, I evaluated and reported on programs to reduce gun violence and violent criminal activity in the Borough through community, government, and law enforcement collaborations and partnerships.As a final deliverable, I developed guidelines to inform and train local government officials, nonprofits, law enforcement, and justice department professionals on how to initiate partnerships to address the problem of violent crime in the community.
