About Greg Bane

During my 21-year career, I am among the few educators who have taught middle and high school. For six years, I found working with the students at Joppatowne High School rewarding. I enjoyed working with older students and I loved the ninth, 10th, and 11th grade social studies curricula. However, I began to find myself intrigued by the middle school model of team teaching which was not in place at the high school. I was also interested in the middle school social studies curricula as well as exploring what it might be like to work with younger students. I was energized anew when I got the offer to work at Fallston Middle School. It was kind of like learning to ride a bike all over again; not only did I have to learn new content, but the pedagogical approach was significantly different as well. I relished the challenge! Since then, I have found my high school and middle school experiences have broadened my approach to teaching, allowed me to bring something different to the table when I collaborate with colleagues, and helped me prepare my middle schoolers for their upcoming years. I am proud of the fact that I have been able to be successful and find a home at both levels. For many years, I have been a proponent of and advocate for the paradigm shift to the 21st century classroom. Technology can be viewed as a Pandora’s box; it’s a tool that can be used in a positive or negative way, depending on how we choose to use it. A decade ago, wanting to explore this more fully, I wrote and received a Walmart Grant for Technology and the money I was awarded went to the purchase of two computers dedicated to the students in my classroom. Bookending this accomplishment, the most impactful way I have incorporated technology is by the creation and maintenance of my two educational YouTube channels: one that contains material related to the 8th grade U.S. History curriculum I taught for eight years, and one for my current assignment teaching sixth grade Contemporary World Geography. Technology has helped me develop lessons that are more engaging and fulfilling for students.
