One constant in the public service is continual change. Following a recent restructure I have moved to the Health Economics and Research Division (HERD) where I continue to lead the team responsible for management of the Department's collaboration with the Australian Bureau of Statistics on the Intergenerational Health and Mental Health Study, and with the CSIRO on the development of the Australian Health Biobank, and also continuing to work with the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare on the Australian Burden of Disease Study and monitoring of Chronic Conditions.

I am excited to lead a new team within the Department of Health combining management of the Department's role in multiple surveys (including the Intergenerational Health and Mental Health Study, and the Australian Burden of Disease Study) aimed at collating information to drive evidence based preventive health initiatives, and will also be working in partnership with public health and non-government organisations across a range of chronic diseases and conditions including diabetes, eye health, cardio-vascular disease and kidney disease. I'll be supported by a great team as I work on some familiar topics and enjoy the challenges of getting up to speed on new topic areas.

Senior project manager for the Department of Health’s involvement in the multi-year Inter-generational Health and Mental Health Study. The Study includes four national sub-studies covering mental health, general health, health conditions, risk factors, nutrition, physical activity, biomedical health status and environmental measures and will provide the most complete picture ever compiled of Australia’s physical and mental health. The Study is being undertaken by the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) and my role is to liaise closely with the ABS, and consult with other government agencies, public health stakeholders and experts to plan and implement the Study.

As the Principle Policy Advisor in the Science and Risk Assessment Branch I provided strategic policy direction for a range of science based projects. Current work includes the development of a branded food data base, incorporating product specific nutritional information, and development of a strategic pathway for setting standards for food products developed using new plant breeding techniques

I was responsible for developing and managing programs to assist Australians to make healthier food choices through the Health Star Rating system and the Healthy Food Partnership, and to undertake more physical activity through the Girls Make Your Move campaign and the Australian Physical Activity Guidelines.

I was responsible for providing strategic operational policy, information and coordination support for the Office of the Gene Technology Regulator, Some of the key aspects of the role included:- liaison with Australian Government agencies;- liaison with national and international regulatory agencies, including development of international regulatory cooperation programs;- development and co-ordination of input to international fora in relation to regulation of GMOs;- provision of secretariat services to the Gene Technology Ethics and Community Consultative Committee and the Gene Technology Technical Advisory Committee; and- co-ordination of ministerial correspondence and briefings

A smorgasboard of jobs designed to expand my horizons, build my experience, or just to have fun whilst I tried to figure out what type of work I was best suited to and where I wanted to go with my career and life. This included time working on the family farm in Central West NSW, various driving jobs in Sydney, a couple of stints with Telecom (yes, I can remember a time before it became Telstra) firstly working in a warehouse / delivery role and later in investigations & security assessments, there was a couple of years with the Transport Investigation Branch of the NSW State Rail Authority providing uniformed law enforcement of public transport in Sydney, and also a couple of years working as a “bouncer” at a club in the western suburbs, before returning to the family farm for a 12 month sabbatical. Whilst a gap year is common now before commencing university I needed a gap decade plus GST.
