General Manager / Principal - Telstra Software Engineering
Most recently (2020) I was asked to perform a dual-hatted role of Chapter Principal QAL (Quality & Application Lifecycle Management) and Chapter Principal RUI (Request 2 Resolve, Usage 2 Cash, InfraCo / Wholesale). Key achievements:• Set up a flow-to-work model in support of our Group Owners / Leads missions’ outcomes. This was through a mix of coaching members of Feature Teams to be more self-sufficient and injecting skilled resources into the teams to achieve / maintain outcomes using best practices. • Resource Management of a technical workforce of ~750 Engineering resources ensuring financial recovery, resource upskilling (investing in career development) and analytics to monitor supply & demand.
General Manager - Release Management And Testing Coe
I was tasked with the accountability for the IT Major Programmes (IT Application Resilience & Decommissioning) with a cross company focus on the need to manage improvements on the Business-Critical applications. Key achievements:• Delivered a multi-year Resilience Program to meet Board Commitments to reduce Telstra’s operational risk and strengthen IT controls (e.g. introducing Disaster Recovery capability).• Delivered a multi-year Decommissioning Program to meet CEO/Board commitments to simplify the IT landscape by reducing the number of legacy IT applications. • Provided compliance guidance and addressed Corporate Compliance, i.e. risk-related exposures. Also, I was appointed to the role with establishing and running two CoE’s being the (1) Release Management CoE and the (2) Testing CoE. Key achievements:• Delivered IT changes at scale in an Enterprise environment understanding the many dependencies and priorities by building strong relationships with key stakeholders.• Introduced testing independence to ensure quality outcomes were achieved with an “always on / customer first” service lens.• Reduced testing time-to-market and cost, and increased testing quality achieving ~15% improvement on a program of work in excess of $400M p/a. A large portion of this improvement came from designing and developing a Product Innovation roadmap introducing and maintaining new digital products / services (e.g. automated testing assets) resulting in a reduction in technology operating costs of 6% per annum.• Provided support for the Waterfall and Agile methodologies whilst collaborating with delivery teams to move away from a large-scaled Enterprise Release program (5 major releases per year) to more frequent, independent, smaller deployments. • Invested in a number of Analytical Tools across our Test Environments reducing the cost and time to perform test support and defect triage at a savings of ~$700K.
It Director - Oss
I was asked to work with the CIO and the leadership team on the OSS domain.Key achievements:• Lead and managed the delivery of Telstra’s IT Roadmap for strategic and legacy IT Solutions. These covered a number of corporate applications across the OSS domains (Fulfilment, Inventory, Assurance, Wholesale, NAEMS, and Partner Integration).• Worked with Human Resources, building organisational capability through talent acquisition, career coaching, contractor conversion, graduate programs and organisation re-alignment.• Integrated transformational/strategic outcomes into a BAU operating model with End-to-End focus across Order to Activate (O2A) and Fault to Restore (F2R) processes.• Worked with Corporate Finance on the Financial Management of OSS’s Capex, Opex and Propex budgets ($160m) and benefit realisation targets (10%) which was achieved.
General Manager - Fulfilment Solution Centre
I was asked to take on the lead provider accountability for the Fulfilment portfolio (OSS). Key achievements:• Lead and managed the delivery of the technology functions for the IT Transformation Fulfilment Program which covered ~260 applications and a working budget of ~$210M.• Took over the technical role of Systems Integrator from IBM to deliver the OSS program.
General Manager - Customer Solution Centre (Casino Division)
TabCorp were looking to bring together their four different divisions and I was asked to establish a centralised view of their different customer bases. Subsequently, I was also asked to assist with assessing the viability of replacing their Casino Management IT systems. Key achievements:• Managed an RFP to replace several legacy systems/functions within the Casino Division with an “out of the box” offering that integrated Casino Management systems / operations (Tables & Slots), Hotel Management systems, Food and Beverage systems and Customer Loyalty systems. Managed budget of $36M and worked with Procurement to develop the T&Cs of a new commercial contract (including licensing).• Plan and set the strategic direction, design and delivery of a Customer Loyalty/Rewards program to the Gaming customers.• Asked to step in and lead the testing activities for a troubled project (Wagering Migration) that was behind schedule and over budget. Stakeholder Engagement required at many levels of the organisation (including the CEO) to advise status, and provided daily leadership to the team.
General Manager - Billing Solution Centre
I joined Telstra directly when they embarked on setting up IT Solution Centres and was allocated to the area of Telstra Billing systems. Key achievements:• Established a new team including the recruitment of 12 permanent staff and 40 contractors initially. • Oversaw the movement / change management of IBM and EDS to a global delivery model for the Telstra Billing applications working with project managers, Procurement, Legal, Vendor Management and international partners / vendors.• Utilising my management skills and technical expertise, delivered a number of “troubled projects”, including the hostile transition of a key billing system.• Identified and drove opportunities in the lifecycle management of corporate applications, including Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) and quality control throughout the Software Development Lifecycle.
