After 20 years guiding Industrial Design at Polaris Industries I have decided to retire. I cannot begin to say how important Polaris has been in my life and how much I appreciate the trust they showed in me to build the department, the studios and to eventually take over such a large part of the development and planning processes. When I arrived in 2004 there were just a handful of people in ID- luckily they were all top-shelf which gave me a great head start. We have grown the team substantially over the last 20 years with multiple studios. We are still smaller than many other fortune 500 powersports companies, certainly any with 13 brands, but I believe faster and better than all of them. There is always talk about teams, about how hard people work and how committed they are. When you’re number 1 that effort is much, much greater. The power within the walls of Polaris ID should make other OEM’s tremble. When I started Polaris had an annual turnover over of just under $2bn- now we’re fast approaching $9bn and the original team I built was able to not only keep up with such growth but consistently lead and push out category defining product. I was able to spend time with some of the generation that built Polaris back up after going public, brilliant engineers and leaders who knew their product, knew how to ride it and how our customers used it. Looking back over my time at Polaris I am both grateful for and proud of having helped define many market and class leading vehicles, from the rebirth of Indian Motorcycle to the completely radical Slingshot to the off-road masterpiece of the Polaris RZR. I have held design responsibility for multiple generations of every product we make including the new Expedition and Ranger XD- two extensions of our successful General and Ranger product lines. I have a garage-full of dedication to Powersports: all of it bleeds blue as do I.I will be riding and always anticipating what the next new design will be coming out the factory doors at my longtime home.
