Brain injury can be a very much hidden disability or a disability that people can easily misunderstand. The need therefore is great for those that can to raise awareness, to give a personal perspective and to share experiences that bring the issues to life. With this aim in mind, I have been involved in a number of voluntary activities to help raise awareness of what it means to live with a brain injury. I have also been pursuing opportunities to use my experiences to help improve treatment and care pathways by contributing to “voice of the patient” activities. These have included:1. The work they do in supporting both those with brain injuries and their family / carers provides critical support to so many that isn't always available through statutory services. Along with with raising awareness of the impact of brain injuries, Headway provides support to people affected by brain injuries at a what is some of the toughest times in their lives.As a trustee with "Lived Life Experience" my role, along with others on the board is to represent the voice of the client at the board meetings. With time I hope to be able to meet with clients so that I can provide broader feedback to the board. Along with all the other board members, our roles is to support the organisation to help it deliver on its key purpose of improving life after brain injury. Show less

As a lot of my closer colleagues will know I suffered a subarachnoid brain haemorrhage back in Jan of 2015. After three years of attempting a return to work, the long term effects of the brain injury have meant that I have to be realistic about what I can do on a day to day and re-think priorities. This unfortunately has meant I have to step back from an active role in the job I have loved at Medimmune/AZ & CAT for the last 18+ years. Headed up a team within the CLD group within Development at the MedImmune Cambridge site. Team is team focussed on the production of recombinant therapeutic antibody producing CHO cell lines suitable for early development, clinical and market supply. Current interests include the use of automation within the cell line development process.

Responsible for managing a team within the Early Expression and Supply group part of Development at MedImmune Cambridge. Team responsibilities were split between two main functions: • Working closely with Discovery groups the team supported drug development activities by producing mg to gram amounts of antibody for in vitro and in vivo assays. • Providing assay support for the wider department, focussing on antibody quantitation.

Role within the Cell Line Development team focussed on the production of recombinant therapeutic antibody producing CHO cell lines suitable for early development, clinical and market supply. A lead role responsible for multiple concurrent cell line development projects, ensuring technical, regulatory, and timeline project compliance.

Evaluation and development of expression vector/cell lines, and subsequent screening platforms for the production of recombinant CHO and NS0 cell lines for the manufacture of therapeutic monoclonal antibodies. Technical development projects included the evaluation, development and implementation of screening platforms and strategies to isolate high producing cell lines including FACS and other technologies. Key role in running external technology evaluation projects.

“Transcriptional regulation of the human TIMP-1 gene: Mapping transcriptional control in intron-1.” Funded by the Arthritis Research Campaign. Project investigated the transcriptional control of the TIMP-1 gene focussing on the role of intronic regulation.

“Production of pyruvate decarboxylase for substrate specificity studies.” Project focussed on the production and purification of private decarboxylase from Saccharomyces sp. and Zymonmonas mobilis.
