About Greg Forrest

I have nearly 40 years of ongoing engagement in PE and Sport, as PE teacher in Primary and Secondary Schools, a current academic in a PE Teacher Education undergraduate degree, a coach and coach mentor in a variety of different sports. I also completed a PhD exploring knowledge and understandings needed to use Games Based Approaches such as Game Sense, in PE and sport environments. My educational practices and research have led to the creation of the Grammar of Games in 2017. The Grammar of Games (GoG) is a transfer-based approach to PE that aims to give ALL learners agency for lifelong movement and physical activity. The GoG argues all movement contexts and sports are underpinned by the same four core concepts (Movement Skill Acquisition, Decision Making, Strategy and Tactics and Communication and Concentration) just as language and literacy contexts are given meaning through grammar. Each of these concepts interact organically in a systematic way at any given time in every movement context, each as important as the others. Thus, It does not matter whether the sport is football, rock climbing, surfing, tag games, school yard handball, marbles, snowboarding, basketball, lawn bowls, aquatics, walking, gymnastics, throwing, cycling, motor racing or a sport yet to emerge, all represent the interaction of the four concepts. And, by understanding what the concepts are and how they interact, learners can understand that past, present and future movement contexts are simply expressions of these four concepts in action. The GoG is decidedly different to the current approach in PE and Sport, which is based on acquiring movement skills and then applying these in different sports. This traditional approach assumes learning occurs because the movement skills are the same as those used in the sport and has been designed by, and is successful for those who experts, interested and / or experienced. The approach treats individual sports as a 'thing' to be learned and understood in its own right. However, in literacy and language, we don't learn a 'book', we learn the core concepts of grammar and, in applying the concepts to different contexts where language and literacy are used. allow individuals to choose contexts they enjoy. So to the GoG - individual sports as contexts where the concepts interact, no more, no less important than any others, all made up by someone at some time in the past and all expressions of where and how people enjoy to move, for the now and the future.
