I founded the Department of Podiatry and Orthopedics for SCPMG in the Bakersfield Area in 1991. Over the years I added two podiatrists to the team, and a wound care clinic. In the wound care clinic we hired five wound and osteomy care nurses (in my tenure) to support podiatry and the surgery department as a whole, and I supervised their work for our diabetic, vascular, and lymphoedema patients. I was responsible for the general podiatric care of our members, and traumatic, reconstructive, and ablative surgery performed in either outpatient surgical centers, or hospital facilities. Podiatrists in California admit to facilities on their own license; prescribe medications; prescribe physiotherapy, radiology, and vascular tests; and request consultations independently. I wrote standard operating procedures for the department, quality assurance guidelines, and documented patient interactions on electronic medical records. During my tenure, I contributed to membership growth from 40,000 to 105,000 members in our Area, and served on Bakersfield Memorial Hospital's Credential Committee six years (two years as chairman). I volunteered on the Board of Directors for the Kern County Chapter of the American Red Cross, and concomitantly to employment with Kaiser joined the U. S. Army Reserve as a Podiatrist (328th Combat Support Hospital). In that role, I saw patients and obtained staff privileges at Naval Air Station Lemoore Hospital where I performed reserve duty 2003-2009.

My wife and I took an opportunity to be overseas. I extended my experience as a military officer with the Air Force, and continued to practice podiatric medicine in this interesting environment. I obtained permission to work weekends and Holidays for the NHS Ipswich Hospital as a surgical tutor in Podiatry, contributing also to examinations for the progression to surgical privileges for candidates in the UK, I was awarded an Honorary Fellowship to the Society of Chiropodists and Podiatrists in March, 1991.
