I have a 40 year career highlighted by stormwater and drainage projects of all sizes and varieties. I designed the City of Virginia Beach’s first infiltration system which is still functioning today. I developed the routine used to calculate the outfall rate through the popular stone restriction device patterned after the Polubarinova-Kochina seepage method. I also pioneered the method taught at North Carolina State University for calculating how interconnected ponds react to one another. This method is called the “Meatball Method” in Virginia and the “Chain Saw” method in North Carolina. It was based upon the moment distribution method from structural analysis.I’ve been involved with a wide range from very small drainage projects to drainage studies of thousands of acres. These projects included the Knobbs Creek Drainage Basin surrounding Elizabeth City North Carolina, the 600 acre Edinburgh development master drainage plan in Chesapeake Virginia on Route 168, and the Virginia Marine Science Museum in Virginia Beach.Early in my career I was a review engineer for the City of Virginia Beach and have returned to the City as its Stormwater Technical Serves Engineer. I now also serve as the drainage review engineer for Pasquotank County and Camden County, North Carolina and is the author of Pasquotank County’s drainage manual. I serve on the Virginia Stormwater BMP Clearing House Committee. The purpose of this state committee is to investigate and recommend different types of BMPs and their pollutant removal capability.
