Senior Human Factors Specialist
During my time as a Senior Human Factors Safety Specialist within the Operational Risk & Assurance group, I developed a strong understanding of air traffic control operations including Tower, Approach, and Enroute environments. I have provided specialist human factors and safety analysis to a variety of projects and operational change initiatives. Some of the human factors and safety services I have provided include:• Development of human factors and safety activity plans to support business case development and project scheduling.• Incident investigation and reporting.• Hazard and Risk Assessments (including facilitation of HazID workshops, risk acceptance, and preparation of Safety Case/Safety Assessment Report documentation).• Quantitative & qualitative human performance assessments relating to workflow management, situation awareness, and workload (including both quantitative and subjective assessment methods).• Training needs analyses (TNA) and Risk-Based TNA review.• Development of Functional Performance Specification (FPS) and User Requirement documentation in support of both COTS and custom design acquisitions.• Human error and reliability analysis (e.g., HEART, CARA).• HMI design and evaluation (including facilitation of UX testing).• Hierarchical task analyses and associated critical decision analysis.• Integration and review of automation and related automated systems.• Ergonomic Assessments (e.g., operator console/tower cabin layout).• Development and implementation of new airspace designs (including operations analysis and support).• Knowledge of Airservices incident investigation principles and practices.• Expanded human factors knowledge within the safety team and wider Airservices organisation.
Human Factors Operations Analyst
Working as a Human Factors specialist within the Crew Environments and Training Branch, I provided relevant human factors Science & Technology advice across a variety of aviation domains. This role involved providing support to both large scale acquisition projects (e.g., the acquisition and design of a new ab initio Pilot Training System for the Australian Defence Force) as well as responding to Operational Support requests (e.g., Loadmaster threat detection and training in Hercules C-130J operations). I was also active in contributing to the development and design of a number of human-in-the-loop simulation systems and design interfaces. In addition to this work, much of my research focus was centred on training issues; operating as the science team leader for DSTG in this field (Individual Training). My research in this area focused on the utility of simulation and alternative media as an effective training tool, specialising in how skills learnt within these environments are integrated into trainees’ developing mental models. This work involved detailed quantitative (physiological HR and HRV based) and qualitative (questionnaire and interview based) workload assessment programs and has led to key developments in the utilisation of synthetic training environments in the Australian Defence Force. As detailed in my publication record, I have published widely in this area.
