Lead engineer on a newly-formed team that was charged with decomposing a set of legacy JSF-based UI's into modern React widgets, while also owning an end-to-end capability that spanned applications. I was responsible for most major architectural and system design decisions. My code contributions were more heavily in the back-end side, but also included GraphQL schema design, resolvers, and mutations, and unit and functional tests (Jest, Cypress).Continued to be an essential resource for questions about the domain and the product, across engineering, product management, and design. Frequently the first person brought in when responding to a production incident, often developing mitigation plans, and leading root cause analysis afterwards.

Continued to expand the functionality of the Java REST service I had been working on as a Junior engineer, but with more of a leadership role. By now the domain expert on the team and "go-to person" across the org for related topics, with the deepest knowledge of the data model, I frequently mentored interns and junior engineers, and worked with leadership to shape the roadmap in a way that created for the largest customer benefit. I decreased response times on a selection of key, underperforming API's by as much as 95% through code refactor, tweaking DB schema, and adding targeted indexes, with all changes done online with immediate roll-back available. Helped migrate the service to AWS using Kubernetes, including planning and implementing a migration strategy for moving DB LOB storage to S3 and implementing a more robust encryption procedure with regular key rotation. I also was deeply involved in the legacy monolithic application that the service was decomposing (Java/SQL Server/EclipseLink). With almost non-existent documentation and large amounts of dead or orphaned code, I frequently had to reverse-engineer and analyze prod data to determine the actual behavior, developing strong SQL querying skills in the process. This led to me frequently building ah-hoc (and sometimes complex) SQL queries for business partners to answer questions and fulfill critical requests. Continued a heavy focus on production support, moving from NewRelic to AppDynamics, and adding container resource management and tuning to the mix.

Scaled and built out a REST-based Java web service that provided business-critical work-flows, with high availability and wildly variable load. Quickly moved from a junior role to taking on heavier tasks, such as designing new endpoints/workflows, creating data model changes and online migration scripts, while expanding knowledge of a highly complex domain (US payroll taxes). Supported the product end-to-end with monitoring and alerting (Splunk, NewRelic), taking the lead in eliminating alerts that were non-actionable, while fixing root causes of the more frequent ones.

Finished my 'summer internship project' in 3 weeks (password lockout feature for internal web tool - LDAP, Oracle, Java, Apache Flex) and began picking up regular sprint work.
