During my time with the company I developed my skills further from previous retail roles as this allowed me to experience a high intensity job during one of the busiest times of the year. The high pressure nature of the job allowed me to improve my team working skills and ability to make decisions under pressure while helping customers with anything they needed. At the same time I was also responsible for ensuring that the shop floor was kept tidy, fully stocked and all customers were being served at the tills correctly. The skills that I have learned from this role have been taken forward into my university studies as I can focus and make better decisions when under a large amount of pressure.

Through this placement I gained valuable experience in industry that built on the skills that I have learned thus far from university. During my twelve weeks with the company I was part of a project to implement lean principles to the way in which the company deals with errors during the production process, this ensured that every problem that occurred was handled safely and efficiently allowing the production process to continue smoothly. Furthermore, I was part of a team developing a new 3D printing technology and so I spent a lot of time developing my skills on CAD software. I was trusted with modelling the companies products in order for them to be tested and have since become very proficient when using CAD software. From this experience I have learned a great deal that will further enhance my time at university but also my career moving forward, such as, project management, time management and CAD.

This experience was very different from previous roles in retail, as it was much busier and a high pressured environment to be working in. This has allowed me to develop skills such as being able to solve problems independently, because everything and everyone needs to be working efficiently in order to maximise customer satisfaction. As I was involved in the production of food I have also tried to transfer some techniques learned through the production side of my university degree.

Working for Clarks I had the opportunity to develop my skills and knowledge in retail and was able to deal with the public in a more one-to-one manner. Both experiences were of much benefit, and have provided myself with coherent and widely applicable skills.
