The SDG Data Alliance is an open, community-driven, multi-stakeholder partnership comprising theprivate sector, foundations, UN organizations, and local and national governments. The Alliance wascreated to bring globally recognized geospatial frameworks and geographic information systems, or GIS, technology and capabilities to developing countries in Central and South America, the Caribbean, PacificIslands, and Africa to accelerate achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).A key strategy has been to leverage UN-IGIF Country-level Action Plans and national SDG Data Hubs to strengthen in-country geospatial expertise, create actionable and sustainable impact, and develop enduring national capacities and capabilities for countries to make data-driven decisions based on their unique national priorities and circumstances.PVBLIC Foundation is an innovative foundation that mobilizes media, data, and technology for sustainable development and social impact around the world. PVBLIC connects public, private, and nonprofit sectors, plugging innovations into social agendas and helping governments, NGOs, and intergovernmental organizations to amplify their impact through original programs, creative partnerships, and strategic donor funds.

Within this role in the United Nations Statistics Division (UNSD), Greg provided the lead Secretariat support to the United Nations Committee of Experts on Global Geospatial Information Management (UN-GGIM) since its establishment by the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) in July 2011. This included high level strategic policy advice, coordination and planning in the implementation of UN-GGIM initiatives, particularly with the Member States and related International Organizations involved in national, regional and global geospatial information management. He was also responsible for developing the substantive content for the Committee of Experts, including its World Geospatial Information Congress, High-Level Forum's, international technical capacity development workshops, and other international fora.A major focus for Greg from 2018-2023 was leading the development and implementation of ‘country owned, and country led’ global geospatial information frameworks and guides within the umbrella of UN-GGIM. This included lead author of the United Nations Integrated Geospatial Information Framework (UN-IGIF), a multi-dimensional Framework aimed at strengthening national geospatial information management in countries, developing countries in particular. Comprising an overarching Strategy – from local to global, Implementation guidance, and Action plans at the country level, the UN-IGIF focuses on the ability for geospatial information to be integrated with any other meaningful data to solve societal and environmental problems, acts as a catalyst for economic growth and opportunity and stimulates improved understanding and decision-making to support national development priorities and global development agendas – such as the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

In this role Greg led the National Geographic Information Group in Geoscience Australia, and was responsible for delivering Australia’s national topographic mapping and derivative programs. He was the Australian Government representative on the Intergovernmental Committee on Surveying and Mapping (ICSM), Chair of the ICSM Permanent Committee for Topographic Information (PCTI), a member of the Australian Surveying and Spatial Sciences Institute, and Australian representative and immediate past President of the Permanent Committee on GIS Infrastructure for Asia and the Pacific (PCGIAP). He was also a foundation member of the International Geospatial Society and Australia’s representative on the UN Committee of Experts on GGIM

In this role Greg was tasked to develop and deliver the Critical Infrastructure Protection Modeling and Analysis (CIPMA) Program, a major outcome of the National CIP Strategy, with the Attorney-General's Department. This included developing the methodological approaches, analytical tools and techniques, and data requirements to enable CIPMA to be able to answer questions posed by decision makers (both government and industry) regarding critical infrastructure dependencies and inter-dependencies, and the flow on consequences of a failure in and across sectors.

Provided scientific research and geospatial information and management leadership in Geoscience Australia’s Risk Research Group. This evolved from undertaking applied research to assess the risks from natural and anthropogenic hazards to Australian communities in the Cities Project; to delivering independent high level scientific analysis and technical advice in the use of geospatial information for emergency management, critical infrastructure protection, and lifeline network functionality.

Founding member of the Cities Project. Using a series of 'multi-hazard' case studies in Australian cities, and taking a comprehensive methodological approach, the Cities Project developed and tested the science, techniques, information, and tools needed to analyse and assess complex built environment and natural hazard interactions. This included applying specific geospatial technologies and methods with geographic and geoscience outcomes. The 'Risk-GIS' methodology became the analytical framework of the Cities Project, capturing hazard, exposure, and vulnerability information in a geospatial context. The Risk-GIS approach integrated geospatial information analysis with natural hazard risk research modelling to deliver dynamic GIS-based decision support tools and methodologies.
