I find it interesting that so many of us in IT didn't plan on a career in technology or took a circuitous route to get here. My journey started with communications security in the Army. I had a great plan....spend twenty years turning ones and zeros into gibberish, knock out a PhD in history, write a couple of books about military history, and finish out my career doing research and teaching. Things were moving right along until five years into the plan when an Army personnel computer decided that I was no longer Army material and redirected me into Joint Service or NATO assignments. I soon found that the one thing that all military and civilian organizations and nationalities have in common is that when a service failed, they honed in on the crypto gear as the root cause and left to get coffee. I was forced to learn laptops, servers, routers, multiplexers, cabling, microwave systems, military and commercial satellite systems, and any other system components to convince all stakeholders that it wasn't the crypto. That's how my IT security career started.I've accomplished a great deal as both a customer and a partner and I tend to get a variety of global responsibilities because of my flexibility and desire to get things done. I like problem solving and am curious about people, cultures, and technology. This has led to my spending about 7 years in Europe and Asia in both military and civilian roles. I'm pretty good at analyzing the use of technology and driving transformation to fix problem areas or drive efficiency, cost reduction or quality of service. My current challenge is leading the transition of Insight's Managed Security service from a limited set of offerings and capabilities to a market-leading global Managed Security organization.
