My 4th start up - makeabeeline.com. My interest in consumer finance emerged when I was fresh out of International Business and Economics degrees. Like many in their early 20’s, I often spent my pay too fast - “king for a day, but a fool for a fortnight.” It seemed that others did the same, so Sean Teahan and I founded Nimble in 2005, funded from the modest success of A-Team Health Recruitment coupled with mowing lawns. We created a household brand giving small loans like never seen before. Little did we know we were pioneering fintech in Australia, growing Nimble to 150 staff and revenue of over $50 million. In late 2016, 11 years later, I joined the ranks of talented founders ejected from their own companies by soulless boards. It happens, but I was no angel either at times. Then followed a two year sabbatical during which I reinvented myself next to the lake in. Gandria, Switzerland, met my beautiful Spanish wife Miriam and helped launch Little Phil. It's a microphilanthropy app giving donors ‘Little Phil good moments' rather than the typical outdated, guilt laden experience charities offer.I continued observing the frustration people face with personal finances and their struggle to buy their first home. This is compounded by... *Endless social pressure to spend money to impress others. *Brain killing admin, paperwork and bureaucracy.*Self serving financial institutions who judge and disempower people. Then the perfect project magically appeared - just the sort of audacious David v Goliath project I revel in.In early 2019, I joined friends to create Beeline - a US home lender like no other. We're doing what's been talked about for years, compressing an unpleasant, meandering journey into a Beeline. As the name suggests, it's the shortest path possible to your new home, avoiding traditional BS and uncertainty all the way. You can do it from your sofa even. Smart technology does the hard work so people don’t have to wait in queues, give paperwork, or meet anyone. We assess credit risk by using non traditional methods and multiple online data sources, recording behaviour and applying sophisticated mathematics like vector machines, clustered algorithms and artificial intelligence.Today hundreds of thousands of Australians "Nimble it" every year. -
FounderA-Team Health Recruitment Oct 2001 - Jun 2004With less than 20,000 euro we’d saved while working at GTS (see below), Sean Teahan and I co founded an Irish online health recruitment company bringing pharmacists and other allied health professionals into Ireland from all over the world. In hindsight it was either a courageous or silly move to start my first company in another country, but it’s not to see that over 18 years later, A-Team is still going strong and has a presence in several European countries. Who would have thought?We posted jobs on the internet not long after it was first being used commercially - back when hotmail was cutting edge. This business allowed us to learn online marketing and software development, giving us the knowledge and confidence to start Nimble not long after we sold A-Team. Three years later we sold it to an English recruitment company for 500,000 EUR. Not a killing but ok. -

I was responsible for pricing the assets within unit trusts and publishing the daily net asset in the Financial Times. This involved collating data from Bloomberg and other financial news services and markets at strict times each day and doing journal entries for futures transactions. While at Statestreet, I enjoyed the work and the team but was already starting to form the view that I wanted to start my own companies. -

This position involved receiving and recording millions of dollars of assets related to rollout of fibre optic cable throughout Europe. I managed accurate reporting into the balance sheet while keeping control of a very high inflow of assets and suppliers throughout Europe in several currencies. During the Telco bubble, these guys were popping champagne and guilty of hubris and we all know how that ends. -

But they all do it, so see above.But seriously, I’m grateful for this time spent straight out of university. It trained me in salesmanship and I met a wide variety of people from ‘corporate’ to self- employed people and mums and dads needing insurance. Best of all I was pretty good at it, so I did 10-15 hours a week and spent 25 hours a week training for triathlons and having day sleeps. In 1998 and 2000 I did two Hawaii Ironman Triathlon World Titles which still manage a mention on this CV 20 years later.
