This lab is used to simulate vehicle trips so that we can continuously test our units. I developed the entire control which runs in a LabVIEW environment. Real vehicle data is transmitted to the units via a CAN J1939 bus. I also designed various bed-of-nail test jigs and their controlling software. Using LabVIEW and TestStand as the main interface, I also wrote SQL Server query’s for database connectivity and C# dll’s for some controls.

I took the lead on, and successfully completed an automated test using LabVIEW and 3rd party test equipment to test an aerospace power supply.The final project tested eight GPS recovery units through a LabVIEW interface. I took the lead from the first client brief, designed the entire system and despite several client delays, successfully completed and delivered the project on time. Six months later all 18 000 units had been successfully tested and deployed into the field.

Managing client relationships after system installation was an important aspect of my role, and it taught me how to build trust and credibility with my customers. From a technical perspective, my role encompassed design requirements for the first time which I very much enjoyed, and debugging existing systems.

I learnt to debug down to component level using state-of-the-art test equipment, as replacing damaged boards were commercially unviable. After working for Peralex Electronics while at university, I was offered a permanent position once I completed my degree.
