I started working as a mainframe programmer. Using COBOL and JCL I created and maintained multiple banking systems. Extracts, reports and data file conversions where the bulk of my technical activities. After 3 years I made a lateral move into the web and database department. At my current position I have designed web based reporting systems utilizing Oracle and SQL Server back-ends and with ASP.NET applications driving the reporting. All applications are custom made at the request of our users and based on the current needs of the company. I have also been involved in designing and building a data warehouse for the company utilizing the Microsoft BI Stack. SQL query optimization has become one of my stronger skills. One instance in particular we were given a query to update a third party database and it was going to run for 14 days. It would have had to have been watched and maintained during that 2 week process. Given the green light by upper management, I spent a few hours testing and optimizing it, submitted my changes to the third-party for approval, and the job completed in less than 2 hours.I have dealt with low-level coding scenarios in which we've had a need to convert files from EBCDIC to ASCII. The third party wanted $100,000+ to do this. I hand coded the conversion of files on two different occasions. One using C# and SSIS to import a variable length EBCDIC file, and one process completely written in T-SQL on SQL Server to import fixed length EBCDIC files with just compressed and packed fields needing handled. The former scenario was file specific due to the complexity of variable length mainframe files, the second was generic and able to be reused for any incoming fixed length file.I have helped save time in other departments which were running manual processes to accomplish tasks like putting loan documents together for clients from different systems and sending out mailings. Using PowerShell I was able to either eliminate or greatly reduce the amount of time needed to complete these different tasks.
